Hunting Elk Heights

I have been hunting Elk Heights for many years now and have had no luck. I am just your average modern firearm guy who takes a week or so every year to go hunting for elk and deer. Has anyone been in the area lately and have seen some animal, or can anyone suggest a better area to be hunting. Thanks and Good luck this season

my dad hunted that area for 15+ years back in the late 80's early 90's and they ended up moving camp because of no animals....    to much logging and to much hunting pressure.

Why do you keep hunting an area that never produces?    With elk the name of the game is move until you find fresh sign.  That could be lower elevation, higher elevation, or a long drive into some new country.  In any case, if it's not working, do something else.

It could never be too much logging. Clearcutting and thinning is what creates food for elk. The more logging the better! If done properly.

 I live in eburg and spend a fair amount of time up in that area. The animals are there and have always been there. It varies by year because of food, weather, pressure, ect... The best bet would to be more mobile and don't be afraid to try unlikely areas and even try different areas if you are not finding fresh sign. Hope this helps.

Which unit are you hunting? I can only speak for the Teanaway side, and I can't speak for modern firearm season, but there are deer around during the earlier seasons. The Teanaway is a pretty big unit. Explore. If you aren't getting opportunities, I wouldn't hunt there at all.

Considering it is Elk Heights I would assume that he is talking about the Taneum unit. Most all the land off of Elk heights in the Teanaway unit is private until you cross 970. Both units are good for elk and deer, just gotta get on their trail and find them.

We are actually in the Manashtash GMU 340, used to hunt in the Taneum, and Teanaway but was really busy in there it seems.  Any advise on the Manashtash?

Try up Durr Road. Drive a few miles back in . Park your vehicle and hike the big canyons and glass. Or can hike in Umptanum Falls. Not easy hunting but I know guys that take a few decent bucks in these areas every modern firearms season.

ive seen some very nice deer in that area. of course i always see them during archery elk season and of course i have no archery deer tag 

i have seen some when i do have a tag and have blown a couple chances at some very nice deer.

i best piece of advice is to keep your eyes open. 90% of the deer i see are bedded down as close to fallen logs as they can be. and you never notice them untill you past them and you hear the "thud" of that first jump as they take off.

we have hunted 340-342 since 93", we camp low on tanem creek and have seen the number and quality of deer decline every year. We spend some of the time at higher elevations with some success.

I and my partners have been hunting up the 3330 for 20+ years (archery), there were some legal bucks up near Grasshopper flat/ Shadow Creek in the mixed reprod around MP 7. Check the flat on top up there. Good Luck!

We used two camp five miles up the gravel road and have not seen that many animals the last two years. But it doesn't seem like there are alot guys back there either. If you get on a spot early you usually don't see anyone.
