So you don't like going where the elk are???  The thick stuff is where the elk are.  Theyr'e not gonna hang out in the wide open.  THe thick stuff is where it's at.  You can call them in way closer.

Well... Called in a nice bull for my dad this am.  He had the muzzleloader permit.  Nice 4 point with doubles. He's fairly jacked about it.  His biggest bull to date. Been hunting that unit longer than I've been chasing tail.  Pm if you want some info.

Thanks for the input everyone.  I was up there on Friday and did a quick tour and some walking.  Very thick and steep.  Glad I started riding the bike last month to get back into shape.  Saw some elk and talked to a muzzleloader who just called one in to his smoke pole.  Nice bull.  Gotta love the smell of sulfur in the morning.  Saw some good country.  Also had a bonus with 3 blue grouse and a nice 'yote.

Like Where?  Do you mean easier places?  The Wilderness areas are where it's at.  If you want to find the highest concentration of elk and the biggest bulls you have to go into the wilderness areas of Rimrock, Bumping or Little Naches.  THey're there because people aren't there.  You can't get there on a four wheeler.  Only real hunters venture in those places.

So I'm not a real hutner because I don't hunt in he wilderness areas? I'm sorry but just because some units don't have a wilderness area in them doesn't mean you can't get away from the people.

Plus, where am I gonna road hunt at in a wilderness area??? lol just kiddin'

Yeah sorry 270, didn't mean to come off all preachy.  I only meant to respond to you saying there are better places.  IMHO the wilderness areas hold the most elk and have on average the biggest bulls.  That's all I meant to post.  Then I sort of went into a rant about road hunters that had nothing to do with you.  Sorry bout that.

Regarding hunting in wilderness areas ...

I would agree hunting it with a rifle when it's not during the rut would be pointless.  I wouldn't really consider the Nile a "wilderness area"  That area has as many roads as the Colockum does.

Here's why I like the wilderness areas.  Until it snows it holds more elk and bigger bulls (on average) than the low areas.  The population density is way, way, WAY higher.  Also hardly ever see guys and don't have to deal with the lazy SOB's driving all over on ATV's road hunting.   Also what is more fun.  Calling in an animal and shooting him at 20 yds (bow or rifle) or shooting some random animal that happened to run past you at 200 yds? 

While the wilderness would definately suck with a rifle.  If you hunted it with a bow or ML it is definately awsome.

Wanted to send a thanks to BullCanyon on the info he sent me on my elk hunt.  Good info that paid off.  Did some scouting on Saturday and Sunday before the Monday opener.  No elk but a lot of Mule deer hunters in the unit.  Amazing anyone shoots any with all the road hunters.  My Dad and I were fearing for our lives at the speed some people hunt.  Monday opened to wind and rain(big surprise).  Took a walk down the hill near Lost Lake with only one deer sighting.  Wind was howling to 40.  Dad picked me up at the bottom where I picked up some lunch and headed back up to the top to walk another section of ground.  Cut a trail that didn't pan out.  About 12:30 the rain quit and and I found a nice meadow to watch for the evening and marked it my GPS.  As I put it away I heard some noise below me.  A bull walks out into the middle and walks broadside about 80 yards away.  I am about 40 feet up the hill so I am trying to find a hole to shoot through the limbs and squeeze one off.  No luck.  He runs 20 yards the other direction.  One more time.  No luck.  So by now he's figured he's had enough of this B.S. so he turns and runs back to where he came from.  Right at me!  So I decide that if that's the way he wants it, works for me.  He runs right to me and gets one in the neck at 2o yards.  Gotta love it when a plan comes together.  Then when all is said and done I was able to get the truck to within 40 yard.  I will try and upload some pictures later. I like the rimrock hunt..I only hunt it with an any bull tag..ESCAPE
