Sooo dangerous are the roads that I can't understand why they wouldn't open it up to atv's and I'm not an atv person...but I myself am lucky to be here from a horrifying incident.  You can hunt Swakane draw itself and do very good.

Offer me 10 grand to drive those roads when they have snow and I'll will laugh at you.  Don't matter what kind of rig you got.  Those roads flat out scare the crap out of me.  Meet someone on them and you will have a pucker facter of 10.5! Take bones advice.

He's not kidding...bring chains if there is any chance for snow.

 :yeah:

Yeah, I agree.  Chains but no ATVs.  If it is too brutal, get out and walk.

Have gone down the road backwards in the swakane and in the Entiat a couple of times thinking everthing is good, It gets to be a pain puttin chains on sideways in the road. I learn the hard way sometimes.

you should think about hunting some place else with that motor home. Also not sure if you know it or not but season there has been cut in half and other then your doe tag it is a 3 point or better area now. Bios say the population as declined a ton i the last few years do to weather and allot of road hunting pressure.
work hard and reap the reward or dont and get left behind!!!

Just like everyone has said, I would not try to take the motorhome up into the Swakane unit.  You should have many other places to put it for easy drive-in hunts.  Wenatchee has lots of RV areas.

Yes, most of those roads suck even without snow.

I just turned a five day hunt into a two day hunt because of the roads. I was even seeing bucks, but the roads are too scary in the snow for me. I shot at a three point Sat. morning and missed. When i first say him he was at twenty yards. By the time I finally got my bow pulled back he was at forty yards.  Went ahead and shot any ways and missed. I saw nothing Sat. evening or Sun. morning and decided to leave. The drive down was nerve racking.

We were on Mills Canyon road, took the first right and went strait up. It snowed Sat. night and it just made things worse. We had chains on but it was a one lane road on top which made it hard when two vehicles came together. One of the vehicles had to back up with no room to spare. Maybe it's just me but I'd rather be safe than going off a cliff.

I was up there Saturday.  I hit a stretch of ice and slid down a grade backwards at about 15 mph...scared the living piss out of me.  Chained up all four after that and didn't have another problem.  I'll get the chains out earlier this weekend, that's for sure.

As for the deer, saw plenty of does and small bucks, but nothing mature.  Of course, I spent most of my day playing chauffeur for my beginner buddy and his doe tag, so that didn't help.

I know V-BAR chains are expensive and hardly used, but on those nasty Swakane Roads this time of year, they're priceless.  I've slid backwards many of times with quality chains, but never with the V-BARS.  Priceless on ice. :twocents:

Kind of off subject, but last christmas during all the bad storms on I-5 I stopped (when it was safe) and picked up chains on the side of the freeway. I think I have about 4 or 5 sets of v-bar chains and about 3 full sets of regulars. I still have to peice them together but I saved myself allot of money.

The roads can be nasty up there, I remember in 2000 I think we could barley get anywhere, but I saw allot of nice bucks that year.

The worse the driving, the better the hunting for sure.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.
