Eder Unit
« on: September 03, 2009, 09:07:14 AM »
Anyway here's an update for you...if anyone drew one of the 15 permits (5 archery, 5 muzzle loader, 5 modern).

1) The unit is now open to the indians...
2) Although the unit is walk-in only there are hunters on ATV's running around on it today.

The red ATV's are crossing/driving on both the surrounding private land and the state land. The Border Patrol is watching the ATV's to make sure they don't go into Canada and back, and they called the Warden to ticket the ATV's, but I doubt they'll get a ticket for not reading the regs...they don't have to.

I bet that by next fall the Unit will be completely wiped out of any even half sizeable deer.

So I posted about the Eder Unit a month ago or so and a couple of people didn't like my update of the unit. They thought I was being negative and trying to run other hunters out. Turns out that a majority of the hundreds of deer I saw last fall were actually on private land. Don't get me wrong, I saw plenty of deer on the unit it self...but I knew that this would turn into a mess.  Certainly looks like it has from my perspective. At least it started raining...

I hear you exactly on the "EDER" unit.   Well put, and I agree.

I think its a stupid hunt  :twocents:  It should be open to all hunters just like all the other wildlife areas.  This quality hunt idea is dumb IMO.  If any of the Eder family gets drawn for a late whitetail tag do they get to hunt all of the Eder unit too.  I know they own a piece in the middle right that hunting isn't allowed..I don't think it is a fair hunt.  the tribes apparently got their way..since now the Eder property is Open and Unclaimed?
Wild Turkey, Walleyes, Whitetails and Wapiti..These are a few of my favorite things!!

I actually drew one of the Eder Unit Archery tags. I hunted it the later part of the season and only had a couple days to hunt. I had a good time and saw lots of deer. The weather was really hot and that did not help. I had two good oppurtunities but did not close the deal. One was on a decent whitetail and the other was a really nice wide/tall muley. I did not see any indians driving around on quads but did see where it looked like one might have been in the unit. I talked with Mr. Eder and he seemed like a nice guy. He wanted to keep it a permit unit when he sold the property to the state. He did not want it ran over with hunters like so many other areas. I had 6,000 acres to myself while I was there. Just my  :twocents:
