Hunting a new area.....
« on: October 13, 2009, 10:43:48 AM »
I am headed out this weekend to a new area I havent been in yet.  Mt baker area and am hoping to have better luck than I have had in previous locations.  This time I will be calling them in vs. looking for fresh sign and waiting.

But i have a couple of questions.  I am hearing a couple different schools of thought on where the bears might be.  One says the bears will be up high right at the snow line.  The other is that they will be down low looking for any remaining berries that might still be on the bushes.

For me I kind of see it as if the berries are disappearing they will follow the food souce to lower elevations.  Right now i am still seeing aot of berries at really low elevations but at the same time with a major food source (berries) growing scarce wouldnt the bears also be switching diets up to adding more protein?  This is one reason i am going to try calling with the hopes of getting a bear looking for a larger meal.

Can anyone give me some more insight or is my confusion whats been keeping me from getting an animal?

Your better off finding smokin hot and fresh bear sign and then calling.  Cold calling is not nearly as effective as calling in areas with good fresh sign.  Ups your odds a bunch.

If you're callling, it wont matter, as they come to you. ;)

If I was headed to baker with you, I would head higher up, as I have seen them up high this time of year as well.

Some things to look for when calling:

Brushy areas, thick nasty brush. Make it easy for the animals to come to you. Watch your wind, especially downwind, as that is often the direction they come from.

You keep at it and you will soon find areas where you think to yourself..."there has to be a bear in there" and then you glass and wait and glass some more, and sure enough, there one is.

The area I was referring too about the berries, seems to always bloom late (hence the honey hole). I am pretty much guaranteed a bear this time of year if I walk in there. I would head a bit high at baker and see what you can find. Plus, skirting the snow line might give you some fresh tracks to give you a starting position to call.

Baker can be tricky and it can get real nasty up there real fast, so be careful and prepared and have fun!

Oh ya,,....take pics!
