any ideas on good places to hunt on the west side?

out around matlock by you we saw alot of sign out there last deer season, couple guys shot one that came in to the hunter breakfast they have.  Also have seen sign out by the state patrol place and the prison.  Good luck

Matlock......that's funny. 

If your serious about bear then North or NW of Matlock.  Unit 636 or unit 648 your best bet.  Search the hills you might have some luck, anywhere from the Skok Valley to Wynochee Lake.  Just to throw out some names and general areas, Browns Camp, Spider Lk, Pine Lk, Spoon Creek pass, Dusk Peak, Canyon River, Satsop Lk, Quinault Ridge, Donkey Creek, and Lk Wynoochee. 

These are just names of places to check out mostly Forest Service and Green Diamond land.
