Help scoring moose antlers!
« on: October 16, 2009, 03:16:34 PM »
I finally got my moose antlers back from Alaska.  I'm looking for some help scoring them.  If anyone has any hints/help for me, or knows where I could take them in the local area (I'm in Orting) to get help, or have them scored, I would appreciate it.  I am following the B & C score sheet, but still have some questions.  I have no experience with scoring, or having an animal that is even close to scoring high enough.  Any help/info would be greatly appreciated.

Pay very close attention to parallel lines and perpendicular lines when measuring.  You'll know what I mean when you get going.   using a square and masking tape on the back side always is a big help to keep track of lines.  Its where most people inflate their score.  Probably where Shane is scewing up with his.  You don't necessarily get credit for everything you think you should.

I'm in Olympia and can help you out, but I'm not a B&C measurer.  There are a few around the area, including a great guy up in Auburn.  If your moose is not a record book contender and you'd like an accurate score, I'm happy to do it.

I work tomorrow, but will look at it again on Monday.  My biggest question is on the palm length.  If I measure the length parallel to the inside line, do I only measure the main palm, or do I go to the edge of the brow palm, including the gap between the main and brow palms (is that what they call the bay)?  Do I measure the length down the middle of the widest point?  Or is it the middle of the top edge?  Thanks for the help.  bow4elk, I may take you up on your offer, if I get in the Olympia area anytime soon.

Screwing up  LOL,  I have watched several vids on how to score the paddles, parallel straight line to the bay of the brows depending on how many brows u can score the longest straight line from either bay whatever is greater, now if it only has 2 then its made easy from the only bay

"I watched several videos" LOL

You did note in those videos that you only get one mass measurement right?

It's hard to tell from the picture but I would score it as such...

If I use the red line, and throw in another loop (or two), I could be close to the B & C record!  Thanks for the help.

Here's the book you want. I bought one last year when I drew my moose tag. It tells how to field judge and score all game. ;) I bought a used one and it was like new.
