California Buck
« on: October 18, 2009, 02:26:57 PM »
got this guy at 800 this morning. Had to start a little late because of the marine layer. the area i was in is about 3/4 of a mile from the ocean, makes for nice scenary. i just sidehilled a canyon for a mile and half and saw him bedded 3/4 of the way to the bottom. 180 yard shot from my 25-06 and 115 gr bergers did the trick. it was a long drag out by myself and came a couple feet away from rattlers three times. i had to drag him out the bottom that is only about 8 feet wide and full of rocks and boulders. the canyon walls are real steep, but the elevation isnt realy more than 1500 to 2000 feet but they climb fast. this is a pretty good buck for southern california they dont get much bigger than 2 points. Pretty decent mass to him as well

Nice buck man! Congrats! Is that the San Bernadino Mountains? Reason I ask, I'm moving to Redondo Beach, CA in a few months to care for my elderly parents and I want to continue hunting whenever I can.  :chuckle:

this was in san diego county, the north end right by orange county on the Marine Corps Base. there is pretty good pig/ deer hunting north of LA that is closer to redondo beach.

all the bucks i have seen here have dark antlers like this one, which i think is suprising with all the sun i would think they would be blonde :)
