Intro & First Yak. Trip

Hey Everyone - I've been reading the forum for a couple weeks and wanted to take a minute to introduce myself and ask for a few tips for my first yak trip.

I just started hunting this year and have a 5 month old yellow lab that is coming along fairly well. I've been an avid / hardcore Salmon and steelhead fisherman my entire life and always wanted to try hunting, but never made it a priority. Most of my fishing is done on the lower Columbia, Puget Sound and Snohomish river system.

This year I made the leap and have jumped in with both feet as is typical for me. I picked up a nice lab pup from May Creek Kennels back in August and have begun working with a professional trainer as well as putting in several hours a day building a solid foundation with the dog. I'm not working right now, so I have decided to dedicate as much time as possible to develop the pup. He is hunting fairly well considering his age and we have taken a few pheasant at the release sites in the past couple weeks.

Next week I'd like to make a trip out to the Yakima rez for some quail and Pheasant and don't have a clue where to go or what to look for in terms of cover etc... I have reviewed the feel-free to hunt maps and done as much reading as possible to prepare. Any advice on where to go on the rez would be greatly appreciated. I'm not looking for the "secret spots" just some general pointers to get me started.

Great looking dog. I have 2 pups right now that I am trying to sell that are offspring of Mason the stud from May creek! As far ar the rez I have hunted it a couple times, but it has been years so I don't know were to start sorry.

snowdog always good quail hunting along the river some of the areas north of west wapato are good for pheasant good luck

I agree, I live around Wapato and the best hunting so far is out north on west wapato.  Quail are good this year, we own a farm and I have seen many big covies this season but I usually hold for a while to hunt em.  If you need details PM me and I can maybe give you a few areas that are good to hunt after you ask permission.
