Halloween Bull in the Nile (arrow pics)
« on: November 03, 2009, 11:09:40 AM »
Well after 12+ years of waiting it paid off big time. I drew a Goose Prairie any bull permit and had one heck of a time finding a elk. My buddy went over with me and we went 5 days without seeing a elk. I was getting pretty bummed out and did not know if I was going to fill this tag at all. Finnman gave me some info and that was going to be my back up plan if things did not pan out by the spike opener. I wish that I had some long winded story to tell you but I don't think you want to hear about 5 rainy wet snowy no elk seeing days in the woods. (did kill 5 mice in those 5 days) . I was really hoping that everyone being in the woods would get them moving on the opener, and it looked like that is exactly what happened. I am one of those guys who used to get in the woods before light and spook elk to everyone else who slept in and came creeping in at shooting light. I try not to leave camp until 10 minutes before shooting light and it has paid off quite a few times and it happened again. Just getting to where we were going to hunt and my buddy looks down the hill and says TWO BULLS!!!! SHOOT!!!! SHOOOT!!!! I see the bulls and they are running side hill and I am above them, I get a solid rest on a tree and anchor the one that stopped and it turned out to be a smoker of a bull. Yes there are rigs in the back ground and no I did not shoot him from the road. I was well below it when I pulled the trigger. Some times S@#T house luck is on your side and you only end up with a short uphill pack! This was a bitter sweet ending to a long wait on a big bull elk. My grampa was in surgery for a aortic aneurism and he told me he wanted me to fill this tag and not to come home to be there when he went under. He and I have never missed a hunt together so this was very hard for me to hunt without him and my dad.
I forgot to add that there is a bow hunter out there who is still having nightmares about this bull.  I found about 10 inches of a arrow  lodged under his skin against his ribs. I will take a picture of that later and put it up. It did not penetrate at all, looked to me like a too far quartering shot.

 , Hell ya..
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

Way to go!  That is one hell of nice bull!  Hopefully next year you'll have the whole hunting crew back, at least in camp.

Way to stick it out.  The Mrs gave up after three hardcore days out there.  MAN it was nasty.
