UPLAND TRIP HELP NEEDED!
« on: November 06, 2009, 06:54:11 PM »
hey guys im trying to plan a bird hunting trip for chukar and quail.  my only spot in washington near biggs has been overrun with windmills and private property signs.  i usually travel to eastern oregon idaho border but due to expenses its becoming tougher.  so i was thinking of trying to take a boat to wenatchee to access areas for quail and towards crescent bar for chukars.  this all sounds easy enough but i was wondering if anyone else has done this that could point me in the right direction, as to any pitfalls and avoidances that might be instore for me.  i have only been over by vantage a couple times along with wenatchee.
i would be more than willing to share any info i have for oregon.

There are a few good places around Wenatchee to hunt chukar and quail.  I would focus on East Wenatchee

if your going to be in the quincy area there a patch of public hunting land off of white trail road that in the past has produced some good quail and chukar for me.  i heard through the grapevine that the state planted some pheasants in there about a month ago, plus theres a series of small lakes/large ponds that typically hold a decent amount waterfowl.

good luck,
steve

If you boat the river be VERY aware of fluctuating water levels.  Your boat can go from floating to 10+ feet from the water VERY quickly.  Just ask me how I know :bash:

Hey uplandhunter870, when you say areas to hunt off of White Trail Rd do you mean in the Quincy Wildlife Area? I can take one more trip and then I have to hang up the shotgun for the year and the Quincy area is closer than Potholes. Any info on this area would be appreciated. Thanks

The game department plants birds there for the youth hunt, the opener, sometimes one weekend between the opener and turkey day, and then usually again around thanksgiving.  The area gets absolutely pounded during the thanksgiving day weekend.  Theres a good chance you will shoot a bird or two but you will be with lots of company.

thanks for the info,  im leaving at 1:30 in the morning should be interesting taking the boat across the pass.  im hoping it pays off for finding chukar most of the landscape across the river looks like shear cliffs on google earth,  maybe that will be helpfull though in narrowing down where its feasible to hunt.    great tip on fluctuating water level ill bring a bungee rope to anchor out farther in the river.  ill definately look into quincy for quail.  i appreciate all the info i will let you know how i do and will try to return all the favors.
