« on: November 20, 2009, 07:31:31 AM »
well me and my brother got back last night from a week of white tail hunting in the huckleberry unit , didnt get luckky enough to get one , but we seen 4 good sized bucks that got away at the last second , our 1st 3 days we didnt see anything no sign of life i think the snow had something to do with it we had about 5 in of snow for 3 days and cold it started melting off and then we started see a couple , over the next 3 days we seen 4 bucks werent able to get a shot at any of them up and gone just like that , then came yesterday morning hunt woke up with 5 inch of new snow and snowing hard , we went out for one hour seen only 1 deer track and i said forget it and we packed up and left by the time we left must have been about 7-8 in of snow and still snowing , but on the good side i found my first shed only one side couldnt find the other , what are these deer doing when it snows bedding down ??

Sledding..
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

Most of the does were bedded down through the storm, we saw some bucks still moving around looking for does, the snow stopped about 2 PM and the hunting was hot the last two hours before dark.

I guess that just goes to show that there are no absolutes in hunting and how things can be different from one area to another.... :dunno:

I saw 6 different bucks yesterday scattered throughout the day, some of them we saw more than once, but that last two hours they were coming out big time after the storm ended, we killed a spike the last ten minutes since we didn't see the big boy again that got away in the morning....my other guide and hunter saw a 5x5 at about 11 and killed another 5x5 at 2 PM and were done. I had an unguided hunter watching a property who got a shot at a whopper just before dark. He said the deer were really coming out after the storm ended where he was hunting too.

I ended up killing a forkhorn Weds night.  It was the third time I seen him this season and I knew I couldn't hunt yesterday so he came home with me.  I found a scrape line that was fairly impressive, had like 15 scrapes in a 100 yard line. Some deer sign this year but nothing like it was two years ago.  I think I'm going to go hunt midwest deer for the next two or three years while the herd rebounds.

Had same luck in ID this year. Passed on a small wt buck first day. Only saw does after that. Very little activity and not much sign this year in N ID.

Benbo30: NE Missouri has great deer hunting. I hunt the SE corner of Iowa when I can get drawn and is near the NE corner of Missouri. A lot of big bucks. Nice when you see 20-30 wt deer a day there when hunting.

Based on my experience when it snows or changes in weather patterns wt does will typically bed in the thick stuff. Bucks will hang around does so will not see much activity.
