Bullet stop

My son want to recover bullets to see how they perform what would you all suggest for a stop? He was thinking of putting phone books together just wondering if there's something better. Thanks Mark.  P.S. everone needs to ride him and Justin to get their Wyoming combo hunt story and picture's on here that they got for a Christmas present last year.

I have used wet phone books, jugs of water fresh and frozen, and rotten stumps. With books and stumps you can put 2-3 different make of bullets side by side for a good comparison.

Unsplit firewood. You can split it and get them out pretty easily.

Takes a little trial and error/adjustment with the amount of loose wet phone books to get just the right amount to penetrate just about all the way through or all the way with little remaining energy then gobbled up in a hill of sand. Sift the sand to recover the bullets in the shape that they expanded to by going through the phone books.

Or, you can build a box framework (not a box). Wrap it with plastic, like the big shrink wrap. Then fill that box with wet sand. Stand some round dowels up in the sand. Shoot through the plastic/sand. Sift and recover what the bullet would be like if hitting flesh and bone.

This is about as close as you'll get to the performance of shooting into ballistic gelatin.

as far as the stop i have used firewood, frozen milk jugs, water in milk jugs, sand bags they all work well.
