What to do for first time hunter???
«
on:

O.k. Cody passed hunter safety today, he is 10 years old and will be rifle hunting this year. I am not really much of a deer hunter. If i see a black tail while scouting for elk during an open season i will shoot it if it is big enough. I let spikes walk.
I hunt ML deer and elk, but my son will be hunting modern so i can focus on his hunting season. But i am looking for a place to hunt deer for him not me, i will drive to the east side if i need to, i actually prefer it. I want him to see a good amount of game. I have never hunted the east side before so i need help.
Anyone???

Youve got the right idea, find some private land where you wont run into any *censored* bags. Set him up in a good spot AM and PM. Mid day do some scouting somwhere else, or have lunch or take a nap so he doesnt get cold, or tired. Kids have a shorter attention span than adults. Make it fun, and dont FORCE him to do anything.
P.S.- Make sure he has fun.

the northeast has some good youth opportunities for whitetails.
landowners are also more apt to grant permission for kids to hunt too...

With a kid in tow, either Muledeer around the Davenport country or Lincoln, or whitetails in the NE corner are a sure bet on private land. Most people love kids, ESPECIALLY antlerless hunts. I would try to take advantage of that now. General season oppurtunites may end up spoiling hunting for him. As you know its tough out there during the general.

If you have the time to make a trip east it might be a good idea to talk to some land owners around mt spokane. There are too many deer down low and the locals get tired of hitting them with their cars. Would probably be more likely to get permission for a little guy with a doe tag. Lots of nice bucks around there too but its 99% private land.

Thanks for the advice, i am not concerned with him getting a buck, i am going to put him in for doe tags and some youth tags. We shall see how it all turns out in the comming months...

I'm pretty sure 15 and under can shoot buck or doe in NE Washington. No need for him to apply for a tag if you hunt that area
