Hunted South Shillapoo this morning - Nut'n Honey
« on: December 03, 2009, 05:14:01 PM »
I saw a beautiful ring necked pheasant yesterday when I was checking the area out.  Heard that it might be a decent area for cottontails.  Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.

I'm going to try for bunnies on the south side tomorrow where there is more brush.

Yeah you gotta wait a couple weeks probably.  There were dozens of dogs and hunters in there everyday for months.  They will pop back out soon.  Which area did you go to?

I parked near the dead end on Hwy 501 and hunted the south unit area on the west side of the hwy.

After being convinced that there was nothing out there, I took a drive around to the west side of the north unit along Lower River Rd. which had more brush.  I'm going to try there tomorrow.

At 45 yards, I got a bead on what I thought was a rabbit in the grass but it didn't move right.  It slinked and then I realized that it was a big dark feral cat.

Didn't see anything.  :(

When I have seen rabbits there they were in the heavy treed section at Vancouver lake.

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&t=h&msa=0&msid=105304692255392501076.000479f10fffc164fc86b&ll=45.661627,-122.720633&spn=0.019916,0.045447&z=15

The grass is pretty tall right now but under the trees it is pretty open.  Good luck.

Thanks Kain.  I appreciate the tip.  I talked with another hunter out there where I was at and he said that he has seen cottontails there.  It looked like prime rabbit habitat too with the blackberry bush islands strewn about.

I'll check out that area you referenced.
