Got this cow yesterday evening. We had been on elk all day and had a few within range but couldnt get any shots off. Anyway, parked the truck and headed up a spur road on foot to get to a stand of timber to watch for the last 30 mins of daylight. We were trying to decide where to head up to the top of the ridge on the way up the spur and as we got to the beginning of the timber we looked up for a spot to possibly head up the ridge. As we look up we spot 3 elk feeding about 20-25 yards away completely oblivious to our presense. The front elk was a stinking 4pt bull and its an antlerless only unit! And to top it off he was blocking my shot on a cow. I start slowly stepping sideways to try and get an angle on the cow and as I am doing so, the bull takes a few steps forward exposing the cow behind him. That was all it took. I draw back as they look up, get a good target and let it fly. I watched the arrow bury in her side and they went over the ridge. A good blood trail led us to her before it got dark. Ended up getting double lungs on a pass-through shot and was able to find my arrow. I couldnt have asked for a better opportunity, about a 25 yard shot to a slighly quartering away cow that was unspooked. Thanks to Don for being along to share the experience and helping with the pack out! We were both able to fill our archery elk tags this year.
