Help with Pintail
« on: December 07, 2009, 11:01:41 PM »
So I was wondering what the best way to get pintail in to your dekes is. With the mallard there is all the different styles of calls. but i have a whistle for wigeon, and the power drake mallard.... I have tried it for pintail it just seems like they dont really respond....  any suggestions? I would really like to get a nice drake pin... never have shot one before...

Thanks,

Jordan

Pinny dekes, mallard hen call, a few pintail whistles, and being on the X.

I shot a hen pintail when I was 15 in WI.  I had it mounted as pins were not very comon where we hunted.  I finally got a mountable drake (not in eclipse) when I was 31.  Hope you don't have to put in as much time as I did to get one....   :chuckle:

Pintails are finicky.  They prefer big water over small water.  The majority I see and see shot are in the late season corn with my group.  I haven't shot one in a few years.  We usually let em work in real close then try and pick the pinnie drakes out and blast.

J-
Pins will come into a mallard setup just fine...there just needs to be pins around to come in. You will get into em...be patient my friend, sooner or later you will be sick of them when you cant kill 'em cause you already have two. Seems to be more up North this year. Good luck

one of the most common mistakes is to stop calling once the birds look interested. It's normally not a problem with mallards but pintail are a little more skiddish than that. I had the same problem when I started hunting pins. Now I just keep a low whistle until the last second then BAM DUCK SOUP...... Or maybe it BAM, BAM, BAM...... Sh@&t

Good Luck
