Joe Watt Canyon elk
« on: December 10, 2009, 10:35:09 AM »
The elk are starting to show up there.  I pulled in at first light yesterday morning and there were ~200 head there.  The area is still open to public access, so those with good cameras may have some good opportunity this week to get some nice pics.  I drove up there a ways and hiked out some ridges.  Wish I had a better camera, with these clear skys and the sun going down the backdrop for pictures was awesome.  The bulls were still bugling off and on, only a couple decent 6 points in there, lots of spikes and some other raghorns.  I drove out and the elk were all around my truck and were not skiddish at all.  So...there may be some good photo opportunites for those that live close because you can still get behind the gate. I talked to the bio and it sounded like they may start feeding next week then the road closure will be in effect.
