help Please!!!>>Rust problem

holy cow, I pulled my shotgun out of the case yesterday and it was just caked with rust!!!...I started freaking out a little bit, I have hunted with it for a 6 years and its been through all kinds of weather and wet dogs and mud etc...but just all of a sudden it had a whole lot of rust on it...i guess it stayed wet or something....what do I do to get all the rust off? ....its a Black matte finish and synthetic stock...I scrubbed off as much as I could with a rag and Hoppe's and ran the rod through the bore and action, its mostly all on the outside though then i wiped it down with gun oil....am i going to have to take steel wool to it and re finish it? ...would I be better off just trying to get as much off as possible and then spray paint it some camo type colors/pattern...once it has rusted does it just come right back???...any help is greatly appreciated.

You should be able to take most of the rust off without messing the finish up to much unless it has eaten into the finish.  If it has gotten into the finish then you may have to refinish it.  After you refinish it you should be ok with it not rusting with proper care. 

If you do end of refinishing it you may want to look into duracoat I just used their durabake product on a older gun I had and it looks brand new.

Same thing happened to my Mossberg 500 a few years ago.  Luckily the receiver is aluminum, so it was just the barrel that had surface rust.  I cleaned it up the best I could... light steel wool, then wiped it down with an oily cloth... can't tell that it had rust unless you look real hard.  Just replaced that 28" accuchoke barrel with a 20" accuchoke... much more handy for turkey/yotes.

Spray the entire gun down with rem-oil soak it and let it sit for 20 minutes, then use 0000 steel wool to gently rub off the rust.

That happened to me last year. I put my shotgun away for the season, cleaned and very well oiled. Got it out after summer to get it going for my pretend turkey hunting season. RUST on the receiver. All I can figure is that when I put it in it's bag there had to be moisture.
0000 steel wool and gun oil got it off, I had bluing loss but it had not gotten into the metal.

try using a greeny weeny.. (green scrub pad)  they work pretty decently and aren't as harsh as the steel wool

if it's just surface rust 0000 steel wool wont take any of the bluing off.

I had that happen on the matte finish before when the gun was new.  I had oiled it properly before stowing and it rusted anyway.  Fortunately, not rust inside the receiver or the barrel.  I was able to get it off - it was just surface rust - with a little steel wool and one of those gun cleaning brushes.  I had to work on it for a little while, though.  I had to oil the thing every night religiously for the first season or so or it would rust.  I don't know if there is some sort of curing process it was supposed to go through for the matte finish that didn't happen, or what.  After that first year, it's like a normal shotgun.  I'm sure it'll rust if I don't take care of it, but it doesn't rust immediately like it did in the past.

I used to rub my 870 down with REM Oil after every hunt. I would put it in the case and bring it home. I never leave my gun in the case. Well, i guess should say i try to never leave my gun in it's case.

thanks for all your help guys...I worked on t for quite a while...the hardest part was the vent rib...what a pain...you can sill see some discoloration on the matte finish, but its kind of like black spots on black and you dont notice unless you really look... its so annoying too cuz it has never happened before...I guess the conditions were just right...I think from now on I will have to take it out of the case whenever i store it just to make sure it is really able to air out...I am a little calmer now, and I am not freaking out as much....thanx for all your support during this difficult time for me...

take you an empty brass case.  Crush the mouth flat in a vise.  Use it to scrape off the rust.  It will not take off the bluing, but will leave a bit of brass residue that can be cleaned off with Hoppes.  Then oil very well.

Don't store any weapon in a vinyl carrying case.  They don't breath, and as a result you get rust.  Those things are for taking the weapon from point A to point B.

if you want to protect it in a safe just buy a rifle sock, they are cotton and absorb the mild moisture.
Also, hand one of those recreational vehicle moisture traps in there to absorb the most of it.
Good als fasioned paste wax the hell out of your barrels also prior to storing it.
three coats on a rifle will last a long time, first and second coats polished, third is left thick unpolished.
never worry about rusted barrel again.
Just make sure to oil the crap out of the chambers and rifling.
