« on: December 11, 2009, 03:17:28 PM »
Just letting all you guys know of the coyote hunt being put on in Eastern Oregon the weekend of Jan. 8-10.  Should be a good one, Leupold, Bowtech, Allpredatorcalls, and Ty's Customs calls are just a couple of the sponsors so test your skills and sign up.

The contest is stationed in Burns but rules state that after check in on Friday night, hunters are free to hunt wherever you wish as long as you are back for checkin on saturday at six pm then again free to hunt until sunday at 6 when contest is over.  Go to www.predatormastersforums.com, click on the "Forums" section, then on the "Events" section and it will be in there under SE Oregon Hunt.  Should be a blast and possible have the ability to hunt coyote for the chance at winning some cash and prizes in the proccess, how can you beat that.

Honor system.  I know it is not a total fool proof plan but how else do you monitor it.  The thing about coyote hunting is the rules from the fish and game are pretty wide open as it is.  No bag limit, baiting is legal, night hunting with spotlights, can hunt all year, and can hunt in any gmu in the state so in order to cheat you really have to be a total piece of s##t.  They have seasoned judges also that have seen every trick in the book with regards to trapping or otherwise.  They also temperature check them to make sure they were not killed and froze the weeks leading up to the tourney.  They did have a guy cheat and had a couple of his buddies go out and kill dogs on the same day as the tourney and gave them there kills, needless to say they were never invited back.  I don't know for sure if it will happen this year, but I was talking to Duane (hunt host) and he said that as it gets bigger he will employ a lie detector for the top five teams.  We shall see.  JoeVon, r u and Amos in or what.

OK...I see.  I was more wonderin about dogs gettin shot in the weeks and days leadin up to the competition, and I'd imagine the temperature thing would take care of that.

No, we'll be after ducks and geese at the time, but we'd both like to get into the coyote end of things some more, we always say we're gonna but never do....  I'll leave the coyote killin up to the Pro's (You and Andy).  Good Luck over there though.

All kinda tricks have been tried, filling the coyote up with some lead pellets to get the "big yote" money, even shooting the yote a number of times at longer range with bird shot to get weight up.
Checking body temps. bottom line is if folks are gonna cheat they can, but it is easier to catch them then you think.

A lot of the major contest have the winners take a polygraph test too.

Bird hunting. :dunno:  Come on Joe, if you are going to call something in, wouldn't it be more fun to call as many as possible and shoot animals that could eat you back. I have gone bird hunting a couple of times and yet to shoot a boone and crockett mallard.  :chuckle: Sorry man but i would take one coyote over a season of ducks.

The Coyote contests used to be fun until guys decided to win no matter what it took to do it. They are still fun to do if you're looking for a good time and not to play for any winnings and looking to meet fellow coyote hunters. Quit doing it years ago and have not looked back. The sponsors are starting to wise up and catching a lot of cheaters but to have to go to the extremes to do so and still probably don't catch a lot of it and when they do get caught they sometimes just sign up again next year and they get to try it again. For me it's not worth the time to play when you know that they are guys in the tourney not quite on the up and up. Granted there are a lot of exceptions and some really great people show up. There have been sponsors of contests that don't play by their own rules either. My  :twocents: on contests. I think I have enjoyed the contest here more than any others.

Totally agree with you.

But, I know of a tournament last year that I was asked to be in.  I wish I would have as I would have taken second place with 8 dogs for the weekend.  The winning team of 2 had 26 dogs.  Everyone automatically assumed they both cheated.  I know those guys, they can stack em up faster than anyone I know.  They have GREAT ground to hunt, a lot of it, and don't miss.

The point I am trying to make is that while I'm sure there are some cheaters out there, not everyone who comes in with crazy numbers is crooked.  Frankly, this is the only "contest" I've ever done, so I speak more out of here say from buddies I know and trust.

I could only dream about having ground like that to hunt in. Ask them if they have time to take me out.  :chuckle:

Big10,
Quit your shopping, take a break from pipe fixing, and go whack a few yotes.   Or, at least thumb thru some of your pictures from your vacation.  BTW, I thought you were going to post some of those.    :dunno:
