A little help please....
« on: December 12, 2009, 04:51:18 PM »
Got out for the first time this afternoon. Being the rookie that I am, I went out fully expecting not to see anything, let alone get a shot.
Got to a spot that I thought looked good and would hopefully produce something. Sat down, had the boys sit down and be as quiet and still as an 11 yr old and 9 yr old can be.
I called for maybe 15 minutes off and on. About 400 yrds out I'm certain I see a yote so I pull up the binos and sure enough there he is. Sitting down looking directly at me. About 50 - 75 yrds back there is two more but can only see from the chest up.
We sat and waited for a couple minutes but they didn't move. I tried calling a little bit more and a little quieter. Of course my adrenaline is really going right now for the simple fact that I've never really tried calling before and fifteen minutes into it I have three sitting in front of me. No idea where they came from. They just sort of appeared.
So anyway, rather than taking a chance of them spooking and not getting a shot at all, I decide to shoot. Too low. Miss number one.
I took the boys up to where I shot just to make sure that it was a clean miss. Sure enough. Nothing.
So we walk about another 75 yrds and theres another one about 350-400 yrds looking right at us. I new at this point there was no point in calling so I decide to take a shot. Miss number two......
For being my first time calling, I have no regrets. I must have done something right. The boys were with me and I think that they may have had more fun than I did. Sure, it would have been nice to kill a couple, but man what a rush.
Any who, my question to all you experts on here. 400 yrds out and its just sitting there. How do you or can you entice it to come a little further? Until I get a new scope and a bi pod, those shots are out of the question for me.
Oh ya, sorry to Team Dog Down for the missed shots.

Now your hooked, welcome to the club.

Coyotes have great vision and it sounds like they had you pinpointed.  A little better cover for your stand , it is very hard to conceal three people while useing a mouth call especially in open country.  you might want to employ a decoy set away from your stand, it can be something as simple as a feather on a string  hanging off a limb.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

When you go through a period of time when six or seven set ups don't work just remember this day.

Sounds like you were in em!

If the dogs have no clue that you are there and believe that a rabbit or a deer just got taken down.  Wait for 5-10 minutes and sound out with a coyote gettin its ass wooped.

Has worked for me more than once.

I agree with AWS.  You did everything right but your set up was off.  My guess is the movement from your "helpers".  I had one 3 days ago that was coming in just like you said, and my nextel 2 way radio beeped.  He stopped and sat on his butt and wouldn't come no further.  He didn't run, but he knew something wasn't right.

Put a backdrop behind you, sit in the shade, put the sun to your back and wind in your face.  I don't know any cure for the "wiggles" though.

Keep it up.

99% agree.  When a coyote sits down they usually have you nailed.  A guy explained it to me that they are trying to get a steadier look at the terrain because they spotted movement, kind of like putting your elbows on your knees when using binocs.

The other thing that comes to mind is that they were bedded down and just stood up when they heard something that might interest them.  In this case, you can try to wait them out, but chances are slim that they will get too close because at some point in time they spotted movement.

Dreams are forever on the mind, realization in the hands.

Many times the best thing to do is use a simple mouse squeaker . Yes they will hear it that far out . if that doesnt work please do not shoot at them that far out unless you know your capable of killing them  . Shooting at them will only make it more difficult to call them in next time . when im in a situation such as you had there and a squeaker doesnt work ill wait a while and move out as quietly as i can . A pup distress will often times work as well BUT this is a sound i SAVE and do not use until the breeding, denning season when they get real hard to call . I SAVE several sounds this way until the later part of the year when i know they have heard the dying bunny blues and several others a million times, and when used will only send them running in the other direction .

Thank you for your input Jerry. And as far as shooting at that distance, I learned my lesson. I got caught up in the moment and made a mistake  :bash:. After the excitement wore off a little, I thought about exactly what you just said  :bdid:. So, needless to say, I will be staying away from that spot for a few weeks.
I ordered a new scope this week and I will be putting a lot of rounds down the range to get dialed in right where I want to be. Even then, I don't know if I'll be taking those shots. I wouldn't attempt that on a deer so I probably shouldn't on a dog either. Thanks again for help.

Those may be experienced coyotes as someone has already been there and taught them a lesson. Next time try a different call from a another nearby location
