Fall River unit 672
« on: November 30, 2009, 12:34:43 AM »
I have a couple friends that want to come down and hunt and I thought I would check it out.
Does anybody know anything about this unit?
Any body hunting there?
Anyone get anything out of unit?
I am not asking for spots, just input on whether it is worth putting in the effort.

I have hunted part of it but not for a few years.  There is a fair amount of state land NE of Raymond.  We used to get on a lot of deer there but like anywhere else it's constantly changing as timber patches are cut and clearcuts grow up.

I am curious as to amount of other hunters. After my weekend in the Winston. :bash:, I want to avoid the circus...
My buddies would be happy with a doe, but I want an Elk, There doesn't seem to be a large harvest, but I found Carcases there last year around Doty.........
Is there elk in the Northern part, or are they all south?

We hunted from Doty to Raymond this weekend.  Lots of hunters, but I'm sure it wasn't as many as what you saw in Winston lol...  We only cut a few sets of tracks but they were in the reprod.  Most of the north west part of the unit is reprod which I would deem unhuntable with a bow, but like MagKarl said, there is a fair amount of nice timber on the state land.  That's where we saw all the hunters too.

There is a lot of poaching that goes on behind Doty since the majority of the roads are open up there.  Makes most of the animals pretty spooky and nocturnal, but if you dive into the deep dark holes you'll find them.  Just find the ground that is so steep that nobody in their right mind would dive into, and dive into it!

Good luck!

Lots of road hunters not many people getting out of their trucks or even parking. PM sent. I went up the 7000 line on the border of the Lincon unit (501). Not all of the land in that area is steep, there is some flatter stuff in the southern end of the unit but I agree most of the critters are most likely in the thick dark nasty away from the road hunters.

I would recommend the gate I told you about in the PM in Willapa Hills unit.

Today I went in the 7000 line through Doty until I got to the active logging.
I stopped and asked them about seeing any critters and was pointed out a spot on my map to go check out tomorrow..........

Good deer area, the elk are sparce but when you find them it's easy to stay with them..they seem predictible and they don't mind crossing roads..or should I say with all the roads they can't hardly advoid crossing roads... If you could get a good snow that will more than double your chance of cutting fresh track..

Just got back from giving fall river a shot. We spent some time in the unit early season so we had a few spots to "check out". We got on elk Thursday and Friday then the weekend warriors showed up! I spotted a herd from about a mile away and we closed the distance. We moved into about 70 yards and couldn't get any closer. The sand stone hill that was behind us was thawing as the morning sun was hitting it. Dirt clawds kept falling and would alert the elk and they would look in are direction. I know they didn't see us and we had the wind right so they didn't smell us either. We watched them for over an hour, half of the herd was bedded and the other half was feeding before they pushed into the timber. I heard them about 30 mins after(thanks to the frost) pushing up the hill across the canyon. I glassed over and got a glimpse of them pushing up the hill. We scooted back across the canyon and got to an area where we thought they where heading. We set up and waited,we then heard them talking up a storm and moving about 40 yards below us in the thick firs. After about 20 mins the wind started to swirl and they busted. We got on them again the next day but they had are number. Saturday was different with all the hunters and we saw no animals all day. We did run into two guys that downed a small 3 point bull! All in all I had a good season hunting with my dad and to me that is what it is about, but that makes two years in a row eating tag soup. The freezer is almost out of venison so we gotta get back on track :chuckle:

I spent about 4 hrs in Mossyrock this AM.  Got into a herd twice in about 2hrs.  Something bumped them both times, wasnt me on the first, and maybe me on the second when I stepped on a twig the second time, getting ready to draw.
