novice coyote hunter looking for advice, please
« on: December 16, 2009, 06:47:50 PM »
so im on christmas break and i have nothing to do so i decided to go after the highly under-pressured coyote population in my neck of the woods.  been out a half dozen times, got lucky, i feel it was luck, called one into to 30 yards and got him, second time out called one in missed the shot.  since then nothing and i know theres a crap load of them in the area.

so what are some techniques that i could use to try and help raise my success level, i know its hunting and we dont always get something but i had a coyote take a crap in my footprints not 300 yards from where i was calling from today.  how can i get them to come in.

also does weather have any factor are certain weather patterns better than others for dogs.

any help/insights are greatly appreciated
thanks,

Steve

if youve called from the same spot and taken two shots change your location and your approach into the area. there smart little buggers

What was the area you're hunting in again?  :chuckle: I don't know of any areas that are underhunted in Wenatchee. As mentioned change your setup from location to type of call. Some days you can't call one in and then the next day you can call one in just about every set. Wind makes a big difference as they like to curl up and get out of it and won't come from any great distance. I don't like the full moon either but it's hit or miss during that period for us. Terrain can also play a bigger part of success or not, for me terrain is more important than wind direction. After awhile you can pretty much tell what direction they will come from

I'm not sure gunfire matters sometimes.  I've hunted an area, made a kill, moved on and come back through only to kill or jump another one.  Heck, sometimes I wondered if gunfire didn't attract them as they have been conditioned all fall that a gunblast means dinner in an hour or two.

Bone is right as far as gunshots, call after you shoot one and if you get lucky another one will sometimes come in, especially if you're around the gun club  :chuckle: . They say it takes about 2 weeks for another coyote to move in once you bagged one.
