Vail tree farm question?
« on: December 24, 2009, 04:07:50 PM »
I went down to scout out the tree farm today with the goal of hunting it Saturday. It sounds like from their phone message that it is open. However I could only find a couple of gates for example gate 819 that looked like I could walk onto the property most the other gates I could find off of Vail Loop Rode had signs posted no hunting. Can someone tell me if I am looking in the right spot, or give me directions to the other gates #'s that are accessible by foot this time of year.

If i was to hunt the Vail tree farm, I would either hunt behimd one of the gate s along Johnson Creek Rd, Thompson Creek Rd, or Clearwood Gates.

You are not allowed to drive behind any of the gates, even if they are open. Only durring modern riffle season on weekends are you allowed to drive in the open gate.

if you need any more inf just let me know. i have nt hunted it this season thou so do not know how hard it has been hunted, but i do have areas i do hunt behind gates.

My interpretation of the message is: The entire tree farm is closed to motorized access. If you are going in your best bet is to stick with going in behind locked gates. And stay out of active operations, however it is slow in the woods and not alot of active areas.

There is a new clear cut just above the Deschutes on the Johnson Creek side.  I believe you can get to it by hiking in the first or second gate to your left as you are coming down Johnson Creek road from 507.  I can see it from my side of the river and have seen deer and elk in it.  A friend of mine has been hauling logs out of there.  I will try and pry some info from him when he gets back this weekend.  You can still hike into Miller Hill from the Vail Loop side by the river but you have to go past some of the no hunting signs.  There is access to the gate 1/2 mile back I'm just not sure which road to take to get to it anymore.  Stay away from the yellow gate on Vail Cutoff at the bottom of the hill just past the pump station (<i mile from 507) by Mahan's farm, it has been hammered and there have been quads riding in there all day today.
