cougar. what to look for
« on: December 23, 2009, 07:56:20 AM »
i am going out this weekend for yote/cougar. i have never hunted cougar before and want to know what i should look for. i am on the wet side and thinking 454. i know an area that is full of cats but unfortunatly it is under a couple feet of snow and just to far to hike into for a day hunt. so what should i look for in a good cat area. i am gona get to the snow line so finding tracks in a good area should be easy. what do you guys look for when looking for cats. thanks for any help you may provide.

BIG tracks.
(a small cat makes big tracks and a big cat makes even bigger tracks.)

Some guys from the desert SW dis' sight tracking in the snow.... that's because they rarely get the chance to! If they had snow they'd do it too!

Run all the snow roads you can, cut tracks, locate fresh ones, walk them until it looks like they're meandering, hunting, or otherwise messing around, then find a spot and set up and call them with a combination of distress (to wake up the woods) and Cougar vocals.

(Good Cougar vocals of course, like the RS series!!!!)

If you don't have good tracks, hit known travel corridores, terrain funnels and crossings and cold call.
