Love or Hate COLT AR

I have read a few threads on here where some of you think Colt AR's are over priced, so I thought I would open this up as a topic.  I would like to hear opinions on Colt AR's.  I personally love the Colts and plan on buying a new one when the Tax man comes.  I'm going to buy a 6940 LE with the flat top one piece rail system from the factory.  I will be the first to admit they are not cheap, but I also believe they are high quality or the military would not use them.  This is also going to serve as a duty weapon for me so my life may depend on this gun.  I have only shot Colts so that is really all I know.  I have seen and held a lot of the others and they just don't feel the same to me.  Also it helps when you can get a discount on Colts.  What are your feelings on this, Olympic arms does intrest me I have just never shot one???

Colt and Olympic are on opposite ends of the AR spectrum. (here comes the flames)
Colt has a very loyal legion (think Ford, Chevy, Leupold, Dawgs, Cougs,...emotions sometimes override logic)
Whether they are better than another AR is subject to debate.  There are plenty of very high quality AR's that put a premium on performance that I would absolutely take into the heat of battle that don't have a prancing pony on the side.
You do pay a premium for the Colt name.
Whether it's worth it to you is up to you.
Olympic Arms are fine for sporting purposes, but they lack some basic construction features I find valuable, like forged vs cast lowers.
I can afford Colt, I bought Rock River.
I can afford Leupold, I buy Nikon and Burris.

 With price being of no consideration Colt AR's have not impressed me. Everyone I have handled could use trigger work right off. Rock River has done good. Les Baer impresses me.

I like the 6940s, pretty sweet set up, I think they are actually a decent value for what you get. As far as the miltary goes, Colt has lost most of the contracts to FN, been like that for a while.
 I think Colts for the most part are overpriced, BUT they also have the resale value other ARs don't.

I'm no big fan of Oly myself, but I don't think they've used cast receivers for 10+ years...

Great posts guys this is exactly the kind of input I was looking for.  I know there are a lot of hardcore AR guys on here so that is why I posted it.  I can pick up a 6940LE for 1300 delivered, just not sure if its worth it?

  I love them.  I have almost always had at least one.  I could be partial to them because it was the first thing that I ever fired, but I've never had trouble with them.  There's a lot to love.  Easy to use, easy to find things for, easy to take apart.

Personally if money was not the option I think I would go with Rock River over colt.  They just seem to me to be a better gun when I have shot them both side by side.  I personally would do some work on them both but the trigger in the Rock River was much nicer but it may have just been the guns I was shooting..

I think Rock Rivers 2 stage trigger is about as good as you can get without a really expensive upgrade.

Its beens about 15 years since they have done cast receivers, they were BAD

I think it is closer to 20 years since cast receivers. Many of the other ecompanies use Oly parts now days. Oly is one of the only companys that makes ALL there own parts.
I just dont think the Colts are worth it. I think Olys, DPMS, RR's and Bushmasters are every bit as good, but then I am certainly no expert.

Colt is like any other big name. They make a good product, but it is easily improved on. Anyone on this forum can build a better AR than a factory Colt for much less than the cost of said Colt. But it will not be a Colt. Just like the 1911's, Colt may have been the market leader, now there are much cheaper and better versions, but as the purists say, "it's not a Colt", no matter how much better it is.

Start with a solid lower and upper receiver, go from there.

Colt your paying for the name. My dad has an Hbar and it doesnt do anything any better then his oly or RR. The fit and finish isnt any diff and the colt/RR are the ones that have had jam problems his and my oly both have never jammed and his only has over 15,000 rounds down the tube O and Gov contracts are lowest bidder

I dont' think Colt offers the same configurations as RRA, nor the accuracy guarantee.

What kind of deals did you find? Apples for apples the colts are going to be $300-400 more across the board.

i am 50/50 no problem with them but i would not own one just me preferences

colts always going to cost more because it brings a premium when you sell it down the road, your rra or bushy will be a fine shooter, but for someone who likes to collect buy the colt. set it right next to your python you bought 15 years ago for $500  and your 1873 s.a.a. revolver that you aquired from your grand father who paid a dollar.32 , they are worth the money because they will bring the money. the other brands are worth the money because they are affordable shooters ( for the most part) and they do the job.

I can get a colt 6940LE which comes with adjustable stuck, flat top receiver, flip up sights, and a one piece rail system for right at $1350 shipped. I have yet to find a rockriver with a rail system at that price maybe I'm not looking hard enough.  Guess it's just like a ford guy over a Chevrolet guy??? Always have liked colts and maybe your do just pay for the pony on the side.

I like Rock Rivers fine, even have 3 of them. The $1350 for a 6940 is a good price. If you want the handguard rail built into the upper receiver (like the colt), Colt the only one who produces that right at this moment, but others are coming.
