Called in 2 coyotes, got lost.

I called in two more today. On my way to my spot on the first one I saw some coyote crap so I thought this will be a good place. I said to myself I'll go a little further, then setup. A little further I saw the coyote about 200 yards away heading out. I figured he had seen or heard me but I figured I'd give it a shot anyway. Setup about 40 yards away from a dirt road and put caller on the road along with my rabbit decoy. Sat for a couple minutes, got done installing a dip and gave it a shot of cottontail distress and I seen him coming from about 100 yards from the caller. I tried turning the caller off but since it was 20 degrees I had gloves on and it wouldn't shut off. I got sighted on where I thought he was going to come out but he came out 10 feet to the left of where I thought,,took a sniff at my fake rabbit, found about 6 or 8 more gears and was gone. Next one I moved about a half mile west of where I was and setup at the top of a little clearing/draw. Gave it a few minutes and sampled the coyote locator. No answers so I hit the cottontail distress for a minute or so. After a couple minutes of silence I saw him coming 400-500 yards off. I turned on the distress again and he kept running straight towards it. I tried turning the call off again but once again I couldn't get it to shut off and once again he almost attacked my fake rabbit, saw it wasn't real or smelled it and caught human scent, not sure which and headed out. I figured I will try a shot at this one since it was close to dark. I tried without much hope of hitting it and of course I didn't. Now I started heading back to the pickup, figuring I knew where I was and the further I walked the more lost I was. At almost dark I knew I was completely lost but I heard a pickup up there. I was hoping they would turn down the road I was on and tell me where I was. They did, turns out I was 5-6 miles from the pickup in the wrong direction. Anyways I knew who the guys were and they gave me a ride to my pickup. Next time I will bring my gps and a shooter.

A couple things I learned, coyotes are HUNGRY right now. First one took 10-15 seconds from when I started calling and the second one took 2-3 minutes from when I started calling. The other thing I learned was how good there hearing is. The both ran directly to the call with no stopping to look around.

how far are you setting your caller and decoy away from you? sounds like it might be a bit far away. it is always best to shoot them when they get close to the decoy never when the get right to it. allot of time when the are that close they will bust without notice smell, sight at that close they can bug out quick. they are very hungery and will be with the cold snap we are having.

Both times were about 40-50 yards.

I dont have a remote for my E-caller so I carry a hand call in my pocket and give a squeak if a yote is getting close to the decoy.
So far its worked every time. I put the call in my mouth, shoulder the rifle, give a squeak and shoot as soon as the yote stops.
I hate educating a yote by not getting one when it comes to a call, I still do plenty of educating.

I've had em sniff the decoy or caller before. Usually when they run from there hard, a voice bark will stop em for a shot.

Thats what it sounds like right? But guess what, I'm going to get one. This would make it only the second and third one I've called in and havn't got any of them. I'm going to get a shotgun also.

Admittedly an unfair and mean shot, even though it was fun. admire your tenacity, (probably spelled wrong, lol)
don't give up. i wasn't there but visualizing your dilema, as written by you, i'm thinking if its sniffin' the box........shoot!!!!!!!!, Lol
as stated earlier, when the yote is committed, turn it off and let him come in. whenever his body language says that he's still lookin, give him a couple squeaks that you feel he should hear (hand call), and then let him come on in, sometimes less is more, once they are committed. ya don't need a shotgun, just some good camo, hands and face too, and shooting stix. good luck.

like said the best thing to do is to watch the yotes body posture if it changes in anyways or he is loosing intrest wack him if he is under the 200 yard mark i won't shoot at them any farther. just shut up and let them leave. also sounds like you are trying the right way but get that caller off and finish them with lips squeaks. as soon as i see them under that 200 yard mark and i am using a prey call i switch to the lip squeak. but if its to windy let them get close enough to hear the lip squeaks then finish them that way. 90% i carry a shot gun my bps is great to 50 yards no problem with my choke tube. its a great idea but don't forget to pattern your scatter gun i have seen allot of people miss or pelt a yote at 40-60 yards and not get them killed check your pattern to determin your max range use 00 buck or 4 buck is my choice. if i calling heavy sage i like 4 buck better more open switch to the oo buck. hope this helps
