AR scope for Varmits and other uses
« on: December 31, 2009, 05:36:57 PM »
I've just purchased my first AR, a flat top, without any scope or iron sites.  The primary use is for varmint/coyotes, with possible defence if needed, and am looking for some guidance.

I see a bunch of red dot scopes, such as Bushnells trophy red dot, listed for handgun shotgun and competitive shooting.  Can they also be used on a .223 rifle?  Would a traditional scope, such as a nikon prostaff be better suited?  I've got Nikon prostaff, bushnell, and others on my other rifles, and like them, but nothing too pricey.  My first impression is to get something short like the red dot style, but don't want to hamstring myself with something that "looks cool" on the AR, but doesn't work and is going to be replaced in a month or two.

I want to leave a legacy for my kids, not a legacy of debt, so no swarovski/Eotech in my future.  Something less than 2 bills.

if your getting it for hunting forget the red dot and scopes like them. get the best hunting scope your budget will allow and at least 3x9

If it's going to be duel purpose, a low power variable (I have a 1.5-5 circle-dot on my M4 config) would be a good choice.

The areas you will be hunting will dictate what power of scope to choose. I wouldnt go with a dot unless its ALL going to be short range in your face fast action . 2x7   3 x9 would be my choice unless most of your stuff is going to be less then 200 yrds if so i would go with a 1.5x5.

Do you guys also have iron sites on?  Would it be worth the expense of adding some on?

I have the standard front and removable rear.  The only time that I use them is when I co-index them with a non-magnified red-dot.  I don't use them hardly at all.  In fact, I may removed the front sight tower and install a gas block... or "modify" with a dremel.
