deer hunting ideas
« on: May 17, 2010, 07:59:42 PM »
I know there's going to be a few thousand "I need a 90% chance" etc... postings but here's mine.

Because of future plans, hunting this fall is going to be extremely limited, no awesome week of elk camp, no countless out of town trips with board members that don't mind the company, no high hunt (man, I wanted to spend a week wandering/fishing with rifle!), I can't add to my begging "I'll come without a rifle just to learn", can't put 10 days of vacation time to wandering around with a rifle pretending to be deer hunting. I'm anticipating one shot at this.

I'm stuck to basically a single weekend of hunting. I need some ideas, out of state, behind a fence [I mean I've 4 years and 0 deer right now, and 1 year and 0 for elk and bear] are okay. although my funds won't quiet cover a full on guided trip, and I wouldn't really feel right watching someone do all of the work sans loading my rifle, if the process is as easy as a Washington tag I could go out of state for a weekend.

so, I need some help to find that deer tied to a tree, wearing a neon sign.

sorry, sure you're all tired of these posts... but I gotta try.

Look at doe tags. Go through last year's harvest report and find doe hunts that had 80% success rates or higher. The best ones will be in units that are primarily private land, and that's ok. You want to find a hunt that is not at the same time as the general buck season. So mainly you will be looking at November seasons, and on the east side of the state. Even in units that are mostly private land, there will be a couple sections of state land, and probably some "feel free to hunt" or "register to hunt" private lands. You shouldn't have a problem finding a place to hunt and even if it's not the best spot in the unit, it's usually not hard to find a doe to kill.

You'd be suprised how good the hunting is close to home.... and how much more gratifying DIY is.

1. Buy Boyd Iverson's Blacktail tactics

2. Get a public lands map or use go-hunt on wdfw's site.

3. find the closest state/dnr/timber land to home

4. scout it often - cuz, hey, it's close- find a gated road and hike in a mile or more.

5.  find the blacktail's core area and look for sign (not deer)

6. wait for it to rain on or around 10/31.

7. hunt that day.

I'm 2/2 only hunting on halloween morning on those years I had to stick close to home (babies and whatnot) and only hunted that one day each season.

just a though - works for me...

thanks for all the ideas so far. I do have a few game cameras off ebay and plan to throw them in the woods when I head out shootin next.

I'd share my reasons, but I can't, got some things brewin.

Alls I can say is this isn't out of lazyness or lack of trying, like I said before I don't believe I'll have the opportunity for me to give it more than one decent shot at this, this year.

Which weekend? Non-negotiable: No smokes, no booze, no semi-autos, you sport the gas. Negotiable: If you score I get the brisket.

Which weekend?
whichever, just anticipating only having a weekend ($$$, make the wife happy, one vehicle).
Non-negotiable: No smokes
Full day without, or in the field without, or? I plan to be quitting... but thems the plans. I also planned to be a millionaire by the time I was 25. I got an e-cigarette earlier this year with the intent of it being my hunting smoke, would that cut it (smells less smokey and more sugary)
, no booze
what do you expect me to do for breakfast?
just kidding, booze/no booze, no problem
, no semi-autos
no problem, packing a 30-30 or 32 winny special, the only semi rifle I have is a .22. Levers are too much fun.
, you sport the gas.
fully expect, though as an afterthought... I might be functionally vehicleless, dang this could cause me problems..
Negotiable: If you score I get the brisket.
I've always assumed 1/3 goes to everyone else involved, that's how I was raised fishing, and how things have been hunting with friends.

I'll second Bobcat's advice about the doe tag.  I spent 10 years in the regular Army and didn't hunt much at all.  When I moved back to Wa, I had a couple of dry years, so I put in for a doe tag.  Got me back into the swing of things, and it was nice to have some meat in the freezer.
Good luck!

As an ex-smoker I feel your pain. I just know that the deer will smell a smoker at about 300 yards and go the other way and you will never know they were there. Read Boyd Iverson like someone else suggested here in the thread. The deer you are looking for are right there, some places there are 80-100 blacktail per square mile, you just have to not give them any warning, and they use smell as one of their best early warning systems. If I don't see any deer because I smell like your smoke, it winds up being a wasted trip.

When I quit it took about 3 months where I quit coffee/caffeine first. The nicotine counteracts the caffeine. So if you quit smoking first, the caffeine hits you harder, which stresses you out, suddenly you need a smoke. Works much better the other way around. There are other things to help, too, like calamus root, and lobelia tea. I smoked for 10 years. This past New Years made 14 years since the last one. Cold turkey.

The e-cig and the patch are just crutches. At some point you just gotta decide that you are stronger than the tobacco monkey. Then you gotta stick to your decision. After a few years you will stop even dreaming about it.

I quit smoking in January after about twenty years. It certainly can be done if you put your mind to it. Just keep asking yourself which you want more....a smoke...or a deer. Sounds stupid but it could be that one little thing that makes the difference. good luck either way!
