Hevi-Shot and barrel / choke damage
« on: December 28, 2009, 08:30:46 PM »
I contacted Kick's (manufacturer of the choke on my shotgun) and asked if my choke, a Gobblin' Thunder extra full turkey choke would be OK with Hevi-Shot.

The response was:

It usually ether buldges or cracks the barrels.  That is why
if you look inside the flap of the hevi shot box you will
see a legal disclaimer that states they are not responsible
for any type damage done using hevi shot.

For those of you who use Hevi-Shot, have you experienced any wear and tear or "bulges or cracks" issues?

Yes, I am on my second barrel on my Benelli SBEII.  I was using an extra-full shooting the heavy shot B's and bulged the end of the barrel.  My buddy blew off the end of his last season, where the start of the threads were in the barrel.  Just watch the load and type of choke you are using.  Some of the new chokes will tell you not to use some of the various types of loads or recommend only certain types.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

your not supposed too shoot  non-toxic,steelshot with a full choke, something is going to give and that would be the full choke and barrel.
It was Kick's made for steel shot.  A pass shooting choke, I had to put it to the test.

got a SBEII as well had the same problem shooting B, thru my kicks choke, i caught it fast when i noticed the threads sticking abit. had the full choke too, read the fine print, lol observed not to be used with large shot, using a modified now for b and bb. luckily only the threading on the fullchoke itself appears to be damaged as the modified screws in well. guess i'll use the kicks full for number one shot and smaller.
