Welts ponds...
« on: December 31, 2009, 01:04:32 PM »
Hit Welts ponds this morning with a buddy.  Spooked up a ton of ducks walking in and setting up, thinking it was going to be a banner day...boy was I wrong.  We saw less than 20 ducks, and most of them were singles, from daylight to 10:30 when we packed up.  All of them were sky high, and headed out to sea.  Maybe an evening hunt would be better?... :dunno:

Same for us in Grays Harbor. Saw five ducks all day, picked up the dekes at 10am... Only good thing was my son shot 100% and dropped a shoveler. One shot on one duck in range today, not good.

Welts is good early season. The later in the year that you hunt it the worse it gets. To many people who sky bust and over call, or can't call RIGHT!  It educates them well and they will come from up valley and go straight to the big water.
I quit wasting my time there years ago.  :twocents:

Hey Travis,
Samer thing that I ran into many years ago.... afternoon hunts are my favorites.  Ya right to no birds on the bay... only 6-650 thousand right now....

Yeah, Welts has been slow lately.  I was out there last week and peeked over the dike.  There were thousands of birds sitting out on the bay in big rafts but nothing coming in.  It was good earlier but now the birds seem to avoid the place.  When they do fly they are 80-100+ yards up and going somewhere else fast, no interest in dekes or calling.
