having prob with profile pic i uploaded one but not showing up do i need to resize?

I have set my profile pic to be 53x40 pixels and it still will not function properly.. I get this error: The attachments upload directory is not writable. Your attachment or avatar cannot be saved.

Let me know if I am doing something wrong. PM would be best.
