Pine Mountain Tag
« on: January 10, 2010, 03:39:14 PM »
I haven't been on much lately, so sorry if there is already a thread about this. But does anyone know how the youth did that had the Pine Mountain tag? I hope he/she killed a dandy.

Unfortunately he didn't harvest a bull.  :(  It was my nephew who drew the tag.  He and his dad took 4 trips over to the ranch.  Only saw one bull, small 5x5 on trip number three, he passed on it counting on a bigger bull later.  Weather never pushed any quantity of elk through the ranch.  Most he saw in a trip was 30 or so cows and calves.  The ranch owner felt bad, (Cole Hansen sounds like a great guy by the way!), but it was just one of those odd years with no snow.  They saw TONS of bucks! Would be a great deer tag!  A couple deer hunters did video a couple 300+ class bulls that showed up mid-week one week, and showed my bro the footage when they met up on the following weekend.  One local coyote hunter told them that you can literally count on seeing 1000 elk through that ranch on a normal year.  They pounded the entire property every time over. Guess that's hunting!  Feel bad for my nephew though.  Sounds like a normal year would produce a 300 class pretty easy.  Looks like the weather finally pushed the elk down just before New Year's Day, just after their last trip.  We stopped at Oak Creek on our way over for a goose hunt in Pasco on Jan. 1st and saw PLENTY of elk then, just too late!
By the way, a local informed him that a 380 class bull was poached just west of the ranch property in December.  Made me sick to hear!!

Dang that really sucks. There are some really good bulls in that herd, was hoping to hear he shot a good one.

Yup, poor kid even had money all saved up for a shoulder mount.  He has lots more years of hunting to do! It was some awesome father/son time if nothing else.
