primers popping out
« on: January 17, 2010, 12:31:58 PM »
This happens to me almost every time i take my AR out. The primers from spent rounds come out of the brass and end up getting stuck in my gun somewhere and usually jams and cuts my range session short. Ideas?

Factory Wolf ammo in brass cases not steel. I think it might just be the ammo, but thought i'd check.

have you checked headspace? Used a go and a No-go guage?

I'd take it to a gunsmith.

measure a new round and one of your fired rounds. if they measure the same at the head and the shoulder has not moved, it is likely bad run of ammo, if it has grown you deffinatly have issues.

I've had this problem since i bought the gun brand new 2 years ago (i don't shoot it much). Not to say that there couldn't be a manufacturing issue here, but i'm inclined to think it's the Wolf ammo i'm shooting out of it.

Maybe you should have approached the issue way back when with the seller/manufacturer? (OK, just jokin)

Are any of the primers pierced? Have you tried different ammo, (same result?)? Adjustable gas piston model?

I don't know AR's all that well to be giving advice, but I do know some very very experienced AR builders as resourse if you hit dead end with the manufacture. You might also hit AR15.com discussion board.

Just off the top of my head with the info provided I would say its a headspace issue.  I would suggest trying another brand ammo, go buy a box its not that expensive.  If you are having the same issue stop shooting it and get the headspace fixed.

We had some headspace issues with a couple Oly's we bought back in the day.  Sounds like the same issue.  Quick fix by the manufacturer.

Do you have enough pressure?  It's probably pressure related (most likely not enough) or too much headspace.

Probably, your ammo sucks - try some different stuff.

two things;

The ammo sucks, buy some american.

Are you shooting 5.56 ammo from a .223? Your not supposed to because of pressure differences. .223 from a 5.56 chamber is ok but not the other way around.

Have the headspace checked, sounds like you have too much pressure going on there.

Have you ever shot different ammo threw it? I too would say try something els other than Wolf. Interested to know how it works out for you. Good luck!

Took the AR back out to the range today with mixed results.

The good news is with a different kind of ammo, PMC Bronze, I did not have one single issue with the gun. THis leads me to believe it's the ammo i was using and not the head space.

The bad news is I still don't shoot any better  :(

Also thanks for sharing this info.  I have never purchased any Wolf ammo before, I think after this tidbit I will keep up that trend.
