When you mount the puller stop, dont screw it into your boat attach it to the down rigger itself.  It works great where shown in the picture.

Please do tell. Do you have a pic of the actual instillation? I'm getting ready to do this install and your idea looks very interesting.

If you have a boat with higher sides these work great. If your boats low profile or a sled with say 28" sides or lower or it drafts a bit more than others they can suck. The length between rigger pulley and ball is too short and its almost trying to lift the ball rather than pull it to you. I just lift the boom with one hand and grab the release. I also use a 48 inch release so it can be hanging in the boat for ease of clipping and no pull from the ball's weight.
