What does a gunsmith do to his/her rifle?
« on: February 08, 2010, 04:27:36 PM »
I have mine at the smith now getting this below list done.

Remington 30.06 700 BDL LH Bolt Action w/ 3x9 Burris
    1- Re-crown
    2- Lap Locking Lugs
3- Adjust Trigger to 3 lbs with no creep or over draw
    4- Full Action Bed
5- Rifle will come with a scope- laser sight bore to scope
    6- Clean and inspect

What would a gunsmith due to his/her own rifle? Did I miss anything I need to get done? This is the first time I have ever had gunsmith work done. I am really excited to see if it changes anything. It shot 1 1/2 at 100 yards, I am hoping for less than 1/2 inch at 100 after the work.

I would start with the trigger job and the glass beddind and scope mount.  Take it to the range and shoot it, see how it does.  If you are not satisfied with the gun...then go forward with the recrown, lap the lugs and square up the action.  No sense doing all the extras if you get the results doing the minimum.

Just my two cents :)

Good luck.

Already signed the paperwork. The list is getting done. Just wanted to hear what gunsmiths do to their own and if I missed anything I should have done.

A new barrel maybe? With all the work you're having done, it seems like a shame to leave a factory tube on there. A .5" gun with a factory barrel can be hard to come by. But if anything could be done to a factory rifle to make it shoot well, I'd say that you've already got it listed.
