Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman Gus Melonas says the train derailed at about 9:20 a.m. on the main line between Spokane and Seattle. About 20 to 25 cars of grain derailed. The cause of the incident is still being investigated.
Melonas says no one was injured in the derailment and the grain spill will not have an environmental impact. Railroad officials plan to vacuum up the grain as they clean up the derailment.
Some freight traffic between Seattle and Spokane will be rerouted around the derailment.
Amtrak spokeswoman Tracy Connell says two Amtrak trains are affected by the freight train derailment. They are busing passengers between Seattle and Spokane until the track is cleared.
