Need to find a pheasant wing and feathers
« on: February 13, 2010, 06:00:03 PM »
I just picked up a new GSP pup yesterday and now the training begins. I'm new to bird hunting so I don't know where I would start to look for a wing or some feathers. Does anyone have an extra wing or feathers they could spare or point me in the direction to find them?

What is the best way to introduce a pup to the bird scent? Should I just play fetch with the wing or put it on a string and drag it around? Any tips or pointers would be greatly appreciated, I want this dog to be a good hunter.

I'm going to Cooke Canyon tomorrow if you want a few wings and or other feathers. I'll just bring a bunch home and you can reply if you want them. I'm in Puyallup btw. Let me know

P.S. Post a picture of the pup!

I trained my dog by dragging the wing a short distance away and hiding it. Try to not let him see where you are hiding it. For the first few months make it fun. Then can work up to live birds. Pigeons work well.

Start early on basic obedience training and try and take a basic  obedience class with other dogs around to socialize him.
I think very important to start early on commands "whoa" "come" and "heal" I always suggest to socialize with as many dogs as possible at a young age. Much more enjoyable dog. I take my dogs everywhere hiking, fishing and is much easier in that they are socialized and not aggressive towards other dogs.

Be very gentle on corrections. You will be surprised how much natural ability he will have finding birds. More of a nurture of his ability than to  teach.
Enjoy your dog
