Whats your opinion/experience with the .204 Ruger ??
« on: February 16, 2010, 01:07:53 PM »
I just scored a Stainless Howa 1500 Varmit w/ Laminated Thumb Hole Stock and bull barrel.

Don't know much about the caliber and the load possibilities out there..  Or the guns long range capability.  I read through a few previous threads about them and saw the 32 Gr. Vmax mentioned which I like as thats my preffered bullet out of my 22-250.  Also my first Howa rifle..

What have you guys experienced with the caliber and how do you like it???  Thanks!  :)

Sweet gun!  I've shot the .204 since its introduction, and have been super impressed.  Plenty of long range capability.  I've had better luck with the 40 grain bullets.  They shoot as flat as the 32's out to 500 yards, and are more stable in the wind.  Neither bullet is a pelt shredder.  I bought mine for a pack-in call rifle, and have been so impressed with its performance, that I rarely take out my other varmint guns anymore.  I've had my eye on that rifle you just scored for a while now.  Heard great things about that gun, and am glad someone on here purchased one to give us a report.

I'm not sure I'm going to keep it so if you're interested in buying one still, shoot me a PM with an offer and maybe we can work something out..

I love my 204R!  The best part about the 204R is you get to see the bang flop or the splating of varmits though your scope. Good luck with yours! Let us know how she shoots and how you like the caliber?

I had an encore chambered in .204.  It was a pretty decent coyote gun with the 40 gr bullets.  It's easy on the hides and usually kills them clean at whatever range I was shooting. I had a few issues with losing dogs that were not hit perfectly (to be expected), so i went back to the 22-250.
The .204 did perfrom pretty well though.

i have shot a few of them they are a good cal but i still prefer my 22-250 for a fulltime varmit gun. even though 90% of the time i am packing one of my ar-15 in 223 :chuckle:

It's a fun cartridge. I have a Savage Model 16 in 204 and it's my general walk about rifle. Why are you already second guessing the gun? I'd love to hear you feed back on it.

Love the .204!  I have a Remington 700 stainless varmint SPS and just bought a VTR in .204.  Have had fewer coyotes run off after the dose of .204 than I have with my Browning .22-250.  Now I think I "need" an R15 in .204!

I love the 204. I got a Savage 12 VLP, about 11 pounds for long range sage rat hunting off of a bench. Liked it so much I got another lighter 204 for a carry coyote rifle. Both my Savages will shoot under a dime at 100 yards, out of the box. You can see the hit in the scope most of the time, to see the red mist. Try the 39 grain Sierra Blitzkings pushed by some H4895.
May you have a target rich environment!

Sweet looking weapon! I've been wanting to get something chambered in .204 for awhile now. It's looking like part of the income tax return will be going towards the purchase of a new rifle in .204.
