Yakutat June fishing.

Just bought tickets to fly to Yackutat at the end of June for sockeye, kings, lings and halibut.  Anybody been up there?  I am going with some guys that have been for a while.  Should be fun!

I have a buddy with a cabin up there on the river that has been trying to get me to go up with him for years, I need to get up there. From his pics I can tell you are going to have a ball.

The end of June is PRIME time for kings up there so you should knock them dead. There should still be a few steelhead in the river too if you get a chance to chase them around.

Haven't fished it, but we stopped there to refuel last August on the way up to Seward.  From the pics on the walls and the fishermen that we talked to, we probably should have sabotaged the plane and spent the next 4 days in Yakutat...

We are pretty excited.  Fish kings in the morning or to limit, lings and/or halibut mid-day, then up the river for sockeye.  It would be cool to have a chance at some steelies as well.  This year, our leader talked the guy who we're staying with into proividing us a skiff to go upriver for the sockeyes.  In years past they have had to walk the mile or so.  Weathergirl is planning on lots of smoked salmon this summer!

I fished the river for steelies 2 years agon first week of May. All I can say is it's an awsome pace. The sun shined the entire 4 days we were there!!! And that is rare in Yak.

Do you guys have a place to stay? I know a guy that has a place and van he rents out and gets you boats and guided trips if you want.

GBL is allso a good place to look into.

I went in June about 4 yrs ago. Great fishing. We were on the River mostly and did very well on sockeye, and some Kings, quite a few pinks. The day we were out for Halibut the weather was not good. Caught a few and some ling.
The Guy we used for Halibut was Scott Chadwick. He was great. If you need a boat give him a call. I don't have his number anymore.
By the way the local bank looks about like the picture above. Double wide trailer.

Is there any prawn or crab fishing up in that area?

never been but your gonna love it,I have a couple of friends that used to live there...Thats all they talk about when it comes to fishing..Have a blast

When I was in Yak we had a dinner of Cockle clams, BIG spot prawns and moose steak. One of the best meals I have ever et!!!

They have a local guy who you can buy prawns from. He walks around town and sells them out of his pack. Can't remember his name but the locals will know who he is. They can also hook you up with halibut and other good stuff.

One of my favorite things in Yak was the old WWII air plane that had crashed and was still in someones yard. nothing leaves Yak it comes in and is used and when it is dead stays someplace. LOL

It's a very spread out town. not really a big town just spread out. Keep an eye out for Brown bears. They are sometimes right in town!!

When you land be sure to go into the bar right at the airport and find the skeleton of the state bird (mosquito) It's huge!!
