couple elk pics
« on: May 14, 2007, 10:12:47 AM »
I stumbled onto these today and thought I might get some of you elk nuts something to  over.  Idabooner and I had to wipe the glasses clean after this guy bugled in our face a couple times.  I needed about 10 more minutes of light to have real clear shots, so we are a bit blurry.  It didn't help I was shaking from excitement. I hope you enjoy!

I heard this fella and another big herd bull down the way talking to the above elk, so I couldn't resist checking them out.

You couldn't ask for a prettier backdrop.  And here was the big herd bull checking me out. Again, sorry for the blur.

Why are they still packing?  I thought most of the antlers had dropped by now.  :dunno:  Do elk drop later than deer or something.  Iknow a few people on here have been picking up elk sheds for a while now.

Be careful what you are volunteering for ;).  I tend to go in some serious hellish places.  As my Dad always reminds me, you better take a fork and salt shaker with ya.

There is only a short window in the fall when the the most awesome tree in the world, the Aspen, turns those colors, that was a dead giveaway! Incredible photos thanks for the inspiration!

Keep me posted.  Once you are on to them, it usually isn't that bad.  They are pretty habitual creatures.  You've got some dandies closer to home, but not sure what tag they fall under, or if there is an open hunt for any of them.

This is going to sound really weird, but I didn't hunt elk with anything but a camera this last year.  It seemed anti-climatic after the moose, and I flat didn'tneed the meat  I still have a whole moose to eat.  I thought about going out and getting one for my brother in law to eat, but decided why kill an animal for a relative( especially when they don't really like me except when there is a hunting season going on.)

I was in Alaska during the early bow season, and I really don't like the late season much.  If one of us in the family had drawn the big bull tag I would have been out there.  Not much interest in the Spike situation  when the freezer is full.  I almost went over to the Selkirks, but never quite put her together.  I took my wife over for some pampering in North Idaho on one of those fancy resorts that try to resemble cabins.  Then chased moose for a day or so.  The weather was too nice for moose hunting though.
