anyone seen the one where the guy shoots 2 steel targets at over 1000 yds. i caught something interesting on it the other day so i recorded it and noticed the grass move on both targets like the targets had fishing line attached and had been pulled. the other thing is there were no flags set up to check the wind. sure it is a possible shot, but how many shots were fired to acheive it.

You need to watch the making of that video, it shows a little more and will answer most of what you are asking. I think it was on the Savage site but I may have stumbled onto it on youtube, don't remember.

That new 12 palmer is pretty amazing, I think i need to start stashin moneys away for that  one. Savage has improved themselves so much in the past few years and really re-created their name. I'm impressed with their new models.

one of the better commercials I have seen.  However, a few folks will be taking longer shots than they should, because they own a savage.

I watched the video, looks like bullet vapor trail you are seeing in the grass.  1169 yards for an expert shooter with a quality rifle, optics and bullets is very doable.  Myself I could not make the shot even with a savage, but that is just my lack of ability.  Watch the Camp Perry Nationals shooting at 1000 yards with iron sights.

OK, so I looked into this just a tiny bit.  From what I can tell the Savage 12 Palma is constructed specifically for sniper competitions, and only comes in .308.
As far as hunting applications go, I am not sure that a .308 carries enough foot lbs at 1000 yards to do much damage to anything larger than maybe a deer.
Am I off base here?  I am not an expert.  Seems like a target rifle to me.

i agree with pathfinder the 308 at 1000 yards is lacking killing power for even a deer is my  i would have to look it up on my software to know but i am sure its not that great.

I've shot, and done well in NRA Highpower, Service rifle competition. 200 Offhand, 300 sitting/kneeling, 600 prone. All iron sights, externally unmodified service rifles, other than bull barrels. 4# minimum trigger pull! It's very doable, but not the best plan on an animal. A SMALL wind shift makes a BIG difference, and in competition, you're typically dealing with 3-4 different wind directions/speeds for the 600 prone. Thing is, an animal can easily walk out of the shot in the flight time of any bullet of any caliber at that range. Which means, a perfect shot could easily turn very bad with a simple step, and a bad hit. Then comes the idea of taking up a blood trail 1K yds from where you shot. It's hard enough 300-400 out. All in all... I can't label it responsible for myself to shoot that far at game. I HAVE taken prairie dogs at 800 multiple times. With that, though, it's NOT a big game animal, and there's really no such thing as a wounding shot on them. You hit, or you miss...

I absolutely agree with you. I was addressing the comments about energy on target for a deer at that range. Wanted to discourage that line of thought, that's all.

We are forgetting some KEY ingredients to this whole test.  The bullet, powder, primer, COAL, runout, case capacity, neck tension, etc etc.  You take ANY target gun off the shelf and develop the perfect combination in ammo, top it off with a nightforce, behind a professional shooter and they will be able to make that shot with any target gun. 

Savage, just like any company, offers a product line with a good, better, and best strategy.  Them generalizing the accuracy of their "best" line consistant with their good and better line is a false statement.  If they picked up the weather warrior and made that shot with some good ammo, I would be impressed.
