My first coon!

Hey all,

Just thought I would share this pic... This is the first raccoon that I have bagged- got it up by the lake in the other pic.

So... I think I want to make a hat out of him.  Do any of you all have any suggestions as to who around Seattle could skin him and tan his hide for me?

Think it would be too cool to sit around the camp fire, sip off the flask and wear my coon skin hat Davey Crockett style.

A hunting buddy of mine was telling me some people eat raccoon...I wonder how that is?   :dunno:

A lot of people in the Southern states eat Raccoon.  I don't know or havn;t heard to many people up here in the PNW eating them.

When I was a kid, Davy Crockett was my hero.  My dad shot a raccoon that was messing around in his buddies' orchard.  Dad had it tanned, then took it to the neighbor lady who made it into a coonskin cap for me.  I loved that thing.  Wore it till the tail fell off, then sewed it back on and wore it some more.. :chuckle:

I shot a raccoon a couple of months ago. I took it to the taxidermist and they are making a hat out of it for me!  It should be done anytime, I'll post a pic when I get it.

Grilled Raccoon
Many thanks to April Barkulis for another great recipe. 

 

~ 1-2 young raccoons - cleaned and cut into pieces
~ 1 cup ketchup
~ 1/2 cup cooking oil or butter
~ 1/4 cup brown sugar
~ 1 tbsp worcestershire sauce
~ 1 tbsp garlic powder (or to taste)
~ 1 tbsp. onion powder (or to taste)
~ 1 tbsp salt
~ 1/4 cup lemon juice
~ 1 tsp pepper 
 

First, make sure when you were dressing these critters, you have removed the "kernels" (scent glands) from under the arms and legs. They leave a distinct flavor if you don't.

In a large pot, place the meat in slightly salted water enough to cover.

Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until almost done.

Remove from the water and place on a hot grill over medium heat.

Coat with sauce and grill to taste. Turn and baste often.

Serve and Enjoy!

I would make a hat out of it.  Never tried eating coon.  Don't know if I will either.

Well thanks for all the replies.

What I found amusing was this quote from the recipe posted:

Although... the recipe does not sound half bad really.  If the economy gets much worse I will be eating my next coon.   :chuckle:

Looking forward to spring turkey now though!

I don't know if I'd call them rats!  But seem like they would be about as tasty!  If you ever skin one, it really reminds me of a bear.  Tough built critter!
