Hawaii Bonefishin!
« on: March 05, 2010, 05:07:52 PM »
So I'm heading to Maui for Spring Break.  :hello: The girlfriends parents bought her and I a trip for both of our college graduation presents. I called a guide I know on Honolulu to ask him about fishing on Maui and he said if I could get to Honolulu he'd take me bonefishing... for FREE!  :IBCOOL:  He's good buddies with the owner of the business that I guide for here on the eastside so he's comping me a trip. I've never been to excited about chasing bonefish but I'm getting pretty excited now. The guy i'm going with is Captain Terry Duffield of Hawaiibonefishing.com. Looks like hawaii has the biggest average bonefish in the world.

Post pics and story puulease!

I did a few trips to the Bahamas and Florida for bonefish. They are a blast to catch on a fly. Nothing like the rooster tail of water flying off the fly line when they tear across the flats and the reel is screaming. You can smell the ball bearings  in the reel as they heat up.

I had better luck with a clear tip floating line. Seemed not to spook the fish as much. This was my go-to line when I fished for stripers in Maine and NH and red fish in Texas and LA. :twocents:

I'm waiting to catch a plain to Maui right now! I think that I will look him up! What's the normal price for a trip?

I tied up a whole bunch of bonefish flies once for a girl.  Some of my best ties.  Do you think I'd have taken a pic. :bash: ( of the girl, not the flies. :chuckle:)

Hey Lewy if you check this, i think that it goes 300 per person if there are two and 500 if your a single, but I'm not sure exactly. I'm just going to use his gear rather than haul my stuff out there for one day of fishing. I'm pretty sure he uses Burkheimer rods and Monic lines. This is a real foreign fishery for me so I'm glad i'm going with someone who makes a living doing this. And don't worry, Bone, we all make mistakes, don't let it eat away at you

Bonefish in Hawaii...?? I had no clue they were there.  Had a buddy who was a captain on a blue water boat for marlin etc out of Maui and he used to go down to the Christmas Islands to catch bones.

From what I've heard, there are not a ton of them out there, like a good day is 4 or 5 hook ups instead of 25 or 30 in the Caribbean. But the size of the fish is amazing. Average fish is like 6-8 pounds or something instead of 2 to 5 like in the Caribbean.

Believe it or not, I saw some large bonefish while snorkeling in Maui.  I was finning off of the black beach on the road to Hana and saw a school of large bones!   So they are out there.... but not in great numbers!

Does anyone have any leads on a good deep water guide service out of Lahaina?  Will be there the second week in April.  Send me a PM if you have any contacts that I should make.
