With the changes in the regs that now allow us to legally carry a hand-gun during archery and muzzle-loader seasons, I was just curious as to what gun and caliber you carry.

Well by the time I pull that bow out of the closet and learn what I'm doing with it I hope to have the $$ for a new .44mag. I'll buy another S&W 629classic 5in bbl. This one I wont sell..

For the time being I travel with a 2 tone Browning Hi-Power 9mm. Saw it in the Pawn Shop and threw my CPL & Visa card at the Clerk Arrrrrrrr I love impulse buys...found a source online for Browning made 17rd mags.

With Bear attacks not likely, how many have you heard about ? (in Washington)
The main reason for carrying one is personal defence, (as in tweekers), but I rarely see them where I hunt.
The only A-holes I run into during Archery season usually are carrying shotguns.......
I personally don't see the need. But If I were to carry, just for the sake of it, I like my .357, just because, and I have a .45/.410 barrel for my Contender, in case I want to shoot a grouse, but I usually throw an arrow at them.....

I pack a smith and wesson 629 classic 6inch 44mag,because I have had a black bear try to get me...Its what I carry when calling bears in the off season..

I am with Rasbo. I had an up close encounter with a large kitty. No handgun. So now I carry something that will stop ANYTHING I may encounter at close range.

I might carry my Glock 9mm while muzzleloader hunting, just because it's light. I wouldn't want to have a 44 mag on my hip all day, way too heavy.

Only a couple in my lifetime come to mind, not counting the one that charged at me, turning off just before I fired... had a lot of close encounters, could have been closer if the bears were as sneaky as me...

When fishing/hunting I'm not concerned with bears/cougars, never seen a cat and the bears I've seen weren't sticking around. Alot more worried about getting in a car wreck on the way to and from then I am about bears and cougars, and to be honest I don't give much thought to car accidents either.
That being said, I've run into a few 2 legged creatures that left me with a very uneasy feeling and I had a close encounter with a couple dogs a few years ago while fishing, for those reasons I keep an SP101 .327 mag on my hip.

When out wandering in the woods a Charter Arms 44special,8ounces lighter than my 10mm Glock,i carry a 41mag if i think i might really run into something.

That's really what prompted me to go for the CPL and a long string of handgun buys so many years ago. On two differant Mt. Bike rides I had to use the bike and my pump to ward off feral or semi feral dogs

way out in the boonies. Plus it made Mom and Dad feel better to know I had something on all my Solo hikes out of hunting season.

I carry a Ruger SPS in .327 federal Mag. It has 3" barrel, nice sights & and very easy to pack.

I agree with both of these, I carry an Anaconda when hunting and my casual walks through the woods in the off season always are supported with my Colt .357 Cobra. These casual times in the woods with my Cobra began the first weekend I went camping with my new bride. Same weekend some campers were brutally beaten and more in an Oregon campground. As we were leaving for our trip my wife asked if I was carrying. Not sure of her intent I answered that I was, "Good" she said, I wouldn't be comfortable out there if you weren't after the Oregon campground area deal.

Tweekers and punks, they're the biggest threat, but no point in being under gunned if you went to the trouble to carry in the first place.

I've had a few close calls with a big tom in Cowichie..... Along with a very bad morning with a pack of yotes.... So with that in mind Glock .40 with a couple extra mags.... That would be my choice because that's what I carry....

I carry a s&w model 60 .357. but I was just thinking this very morning that a freedom arms model 97 w/ a 4 or so inch barrel in .44 special might be pretty handy.

I've been looking at the Bersa Thunder HC 40 or Thunder UC 45. From what I hear, Bersa makes a good handgun.

My first and only handgun so far... Dan Wesson .357 with 4" barrel. Feel soo much better with a bangstick on me in the woods solo than without it! It was REALLY comforting having it on my hip taking my girl to a late night parkside bday dinner last night. Deadend road public park by the river = never know who/what is going to be down there...

I'm not a fan of being "under-gunned" but I also know I don't want to try to conceal a 6" 44mag or something similar in size while I'm also wearing a pack, binos, and toting my bow around...
I also believe a gun in the pack is too darn slow in case something did arise.

That being said, my 4" Kimber .45 will be on my waist. I can keep all shots on a paper plate off-hand at 40yds and I feel it is "enough" gun for dogs, cats, and tweakers.

Hunting equipment: Hunters using muzzleloaders or archery equipment will be allowed to carry a handgun for personal protection if they have a concealed pistol permit. Hunters may also use black powder pistols to hunt during muzzleloader seasons.

Their reasoning is:

The commission has always been concerned about the potential for individual bowhunters to use a sidearm to unlawfully kill big game. Knowing that individuals with concealed pistol licenses (CPL) are thoroughly vetted through a criminal background history check, the commission has a high level of confidence that CPL holders will not wish to jeopardize their license. There is no such assurance with the general hunter who does not possess a CPL.

I thought this was over turned b/c it was deemed unconstitutional? if you look at the proosed changes to this years reqs thats how it is written anyway.

Even if the new proposal for this year is shot down, I think the old rule requiring a CPL does not mean it is req'd to be concealed.......(I may be wrong though.)

This year they are changing the rule so anybody can legally carry a handgun while archery or muzzleloader hunting.
