ever change a rifle stock?
« on: March 28, 2010, 06:34:58 PM »
I have been thinking of changing the stock on my main hunting rifle. I am looking at a lighter and ( i think ) better looking stock. Right now my rifle shoots great and I don't want to mess it up.

If you have ever changed a stock did you run into any trouble taking it apart and putting it back together? Did your gun shoot the same after the change?

I have a Remington 700 .300 ultra mag with a laminated stock. ( not my gun but same stock )

Here is the stock I want. Remington XCR

There may be a few minor fit problems that can be fixed with some sandpaper.  Other than that, if it is a drop in stock, all should be good.  You will need to re sight in your rifle though.  (Another excuse to go shooting)  :chuckle:

Make sure you check the safety, bolt and trigger clearance.  Also make sure the safety stays on, not pop off due to light contact.

You should be able to do it in about 30 min.

Have a .270 rem 700 on a wood stock changed it to synthetic. Took me the time of unscrewing it an changing an screwing it back down. No problems dropped right in an went out an resighted. All is good.

the biggest factor, bedding aside, is going to be screw pressures. do not try to tighten the stock down with the rear screw. the action lug screw is the one that will get the bulk of the torque. I would bed a new stock, just because you have it off. you can use devcon and it sets up quite quickly.

No problem, it will be very easy for you.  I have changed a few, and never had accuracy issues.

Craig.
If you have any problems shoot me a PM and we'll get together and I'll help you.
I take my rifles out of their stocks all the time.
Just make sure the stock you buy has the same barrel channel and it will be a simple drop in.

That XCR is a great stock and will work very well with a little work. This stock works especially well in wet weather. I would do like some others have said and bed your action and make sure your barrel is not riding your stock.

one other thing that very rarely occurs.....check to be sure the action screws do not protrude to where they touch the bolt.....almost never happens, but causes headaches when it does

I have changed out many factory remington stocks, verry easy. get your self a pice of 1"pvc pipe and rap it with sand paper and sand  the snot out of it.  you want to be able to run a doller bill all the way to the locking lug. This will insure good accuracy. :bfg: :bfg: :bfg:

Changed out my 300 last year from wood to synthetic and it was pretty easy.  As others have pointed out it may take a bit of trimming and sanding but most likely not with that XCR stock.
