John,

I hope you have an awesome time up there, Alaska is like nothing that words can describe I spent 6 years there and still cannot use words to express it. Admiralty has some awesome bear hunting on it. I wish you the best of luck. Take a lot of pictures and enjoy the time hunting with your son.

Hell Rugs are 3-5k...  Thats the crappo part of hunting brownies. If you shoot a big one its costs a small fortune to deal with it after the fact.  One is all that Im going to do. :dunno:

Trust me. If you can afford a brown bear hunt you aren't worried too awful much about the taxidermy bill. :chuckle:
So let me get this straight just because you think someone can afford to go on a Grizzly hunt that is justification to charge them out the ying yang for their animal? So what if a guy saves up for 10 years to get a Grizzly hunt; now he has to save even longer to for the taxidermy bill. What I don't get is most everyones starting price for a full sized black bear mount is $2,500.00 but yet a Grizzly starts out at $5,000.00.  The average Interior Grizzly is 6-7'. Now a larger size Black Bear is in the same range but won't cost me the same; so just because it's a Grizzly we charge double. Sounds kinda crappy to me... kinda reminds me of the Washington Fish and Game... out to make a buck.

Yep you got it right we are all just out to shove weathered broom handles up our customers ass.

I absolutly love to hate the topics that get started about taxidermists "over charging".  Mostly because 95% of the people doing the complaining don't even know what they are talking about.

You guys are going to make me sit down and crunch numbers.

John, all I can say is that I am envious of you. It is my dream to go Grizzly hunting but will be saving for years to afford the hunt. Even longer with the taxidermy prices you got quoted. I guess its a matter of what a person is willing to pay to get it done. Kinda reminds me of the Major Leagues; the better a ball player thinks he is or the longer he has been in the big leagues the more he feels he deserves for his salary  :twocents:   ... but good luck and post the pics when you get back....Scott

No , 5,ooo is not a major league price. In the majors a grizz, no matter what kind will go 10,000 . Im not in the Majors, Im a minor league player . If people actually knew how much time and work a lifesize bear is you may understand . Mods alone can take up to a day to do and a couple hundred bucks in materials, hell thats around 240-300 dollars in just wages. Even just a 7 foot grizz, your form is still going to run $800.00 . Figure all the time you have working on the mount (probably a week total  ) it adds up. I worked with 2  world class taxidermist and another Taxidermist to mount a 7 foot interior  grizz. With modifacations to the form , prepping that big asssed bear (7 foot grizz is bigger than a 7 foot black bear all the way around ) and mounting that bad boy up it took 4 of us 2 full days 12 plus hours a day to mount. Thats just the bear, no base, habitat .  I want to make it in the taxidermy buisness and live a comfortable life which I am not living yet. At $2000.00 , my salary a month aint squat. Joe makes more on his retirement than that. $5000.00 quote is a fair damn quote !   :IBCOOL:

So you're saying that BECAUSE you saved for years you should get your bear mounted cheaper. Give me a fricken break! Take your bear to a taxidermist willing to give you a break because you paid OVER INFLATED prices for a bear hunt and then post the pic's here so we can see what he looks like.

I charge a fair price for hard work. In fact I'm just under $200 what my competitor's charge for a deer shoulder mount just to keep a lot of my customers from going to the inexperienced fly by night taxidermists. I've watched my customers children grow from 1 year old kids to teenagers and if I charged what the going rate was in my area I would lose them. Don't tell me that I'm screwing my customers. You obviously have no idea what goes into good taxidermy.

Good luck on your hunt. Just remember.......you get what you pay for wether it's taxidermy or guided hunting trips.
