We are heading over to Stevens county. We've never hunted as far north as we are going, so we thought we'd better check out a few areas for camping spots and birds.

Just got back from Stevens and Ferry counties, we spent a bit of time in each searching for turkeys. Friday we spent the afternoon trapsing around some areas in Ferry county. We actually stumbled upon a few birds up high, in some snow,which surprised us. Other than that, the area was pretty sterile.

Today we hit up the Colville/Chewelah area. Spent most of the time searching for camping spots as we assumed most areas have birds. We did end up seeing two seperate long birds and a few hens.

Overall, it seemed like the birds were being very quiet. It also appeared that he birds weren't in big flocks yet. The birds we did see were solo or in a small group. The trip was worth it and we are stoked to hunt the area, which is totally new to us.

I wouldn't expect the birds to be in large flocks unless there was still a lot of snow on the ground or they were farm birds.  I think they will be pretty spread out this year.  Looking forward to covering some ground.

Got back from a drive and 3 mile hike. at 8:am.  This is the 4 Th time, in 2 weeks, looking in the morning. Big difference this time. Saw 5 flocks of turkeys (smaller groups). Saw probably 80-100 birds, a lot of gobblers.  It would appear the turkeys in my area are just breaking up into smaller groups and getting away from the winter areas. The same with the deer, numbers way up probably 4 times.

It appears the animals, even with the mild winter, are going into the summer areas, according to the calender. The gobblers were doing a lot of pushing and shoving,  I did hear one gobble, a Jake.

I talked to one farmer who had a goat taken in the pen near his house, by a cougar. It came back 5 times to finish eating it.  In past years he has had 2 turkey hunters, on his place, have a cougar come in while turkey calling.  A friend had a cougar come in while his son was calling turkeys, that cougar didn't walk out.
