Cool...thanks. I just mounted up the scope in the Ruger rings that came with the gun...not even out of the package yet. I think it will make a nice little blacktail gun. The scope I got is a Burris Signature Select 1.5-6x40. Nice piece of glass. All up it's a nice rig. It will be even better once the stock gets upgraded.

I just picked up a Remington 700 Mountain Rifle in 7X57.  Went out and shot it the other day.  Very low recoil, very comfortable to shoot.

I had a Ruger M77 in 7x57 as a loaner gun from a gunsmith who botched a repair job on my rifle right before an antelope hunt.  Remington Core-lokt factories, was VERY impressed.  Recoil was SURPRISINGLY low, and killed several antelope DRT out to about 250 yards.  Didn't want to give it back ...

Killed my first deer, first elk and first bear with a 7x57 mauser.  Truly was a mauser gun with a set of Lyman peep sights on it.  Great gun with great accuracy.  One thing about that boat paddle stock, I have one on a all weather ruger in 300win.  Muck like you never liked the look of it either, I replaced it.  Gun just didn't feel the same or point the same for me, went back to the boat paddle, embarced the true ugliness and it shoots great.  I'm just sayin.....

Sorry I forgot this thread. Here's the rifle after a parkerizing job and a new style Hawkeye synthetic stock...I couldn't handle the pretty deep blue finish it used to have.

So I'm the proud new owner of an unfired Ruger m77  in 7x57 mauser. I will pick it up on monday. If there ever was a caliber I couldn't possibly know anything  less about, this is it. I was told it's a great caliber and I've been doing some reading on it a little and it seems like it is a good one. If anybody's got any input on it or suggestions for replacing the skeleton or "boat paddle" stock it's got on it I'm all ears. It seemed to be a good deal so I jumped on it.

I believe McMillan makes stocks inletted for Rugers.  I think Bell & Carlson does as well.

A really great cartridge there with surprisingly low recoil when compared to similar cartridges, good looking rifle too.

7x57 is in the ballpark of the 7mm-08, the only "drawback" is that it won't fit a short action(if you're one of those picky types).  the upside is that once you get into the heavier bullets(160gr and up) it'll sling them better than the 7-08.  factory ammo seems a little limited.

Factory ammo is limited to 43,000-45,000 CUP in deference to the number of Mauser 1892/1893/1895 rifles chambered in it that are still floating around...Like the 2 that I have.  That said, once it is loaded for modern rifles into the 52,000-55,000 CUP range its the full equal of the .308/30-06 class cartridges..but with a better BC and SD for equal bullet bullet weight
