Afternoon/Evening tactics?
« on: April 15, 2010, 02:54:27 PM »
I've been scouting/shed hunting a new area for about 6 weeks now,  I have seen/heard a lot of turkeys in the am, but haven't heard anything and I've only seen half a dozen (at the most) in the evening.  This is what I've heard as far as typical spring turkey movements... they fly down at sunrise, eat for a while and do their breeding, go back in the woods/cover late morning to sit on eggs or lay more, then get active again mid to late afternoon and feed/breed until they fly back up to roost.

First thing is do I have the correct "typical movement" information?

If so, then simple answer is they're in a different spot for the afternoon/evenings..... What should I be looking for?

FYI shed count is ZERO. lots of sign, a couple moose and a few deer, but no sheds... but I have all summer for that

if you know the general area they roost in you can setup in a spot and wait and call off and on. you just don't wantto bump there roost area so if they don'r come in leave very sneaky. also allot of toms later in the season tend to go to a sturt zone and just strut for hours sometimes. i have one spot that i know of. "i do not have permission to hunt on, but i just like to talk turkey and seen them." it is a place were 3 canyons come together with a big medow and everytime i go by there i can usally see 2-3 toms doing the strut zone and back and forth and etc.

IMO, your best bet is to put in the time during the later evening just before roost and locate their roosting trees.  This leads to formulating a plan for the morning hunt. :twocents:

I did that this evening, gotta plan A and a plan B.  I didn't see any birds, but I know we were pretty close, we could hear them flying up to roost.  Hope to be posting a pic in the AM.   :)
